4790K or 6600K with quick sync?

Just a quick question. The 4790K has a better passmark score but the 6600k has a better version of quick sync. Would the 6600K with hardware transcoding enabled yield more multi transcodes? or would the 4790K still beat it without hardware transcoding enabled?

edit: i don’t have a graphics card to throw in this system, so i’ll be relying on the CPU only.

I don’t have any hard numbers comparing software vs. HW-accelerated transcoding.
From looking at those two CPUs, the i5-6600K should be approx. one 1080p transcode short of the i7-4790K. In that case I suppose it’ll be better to go with the 6600K (especially as it should be able to give you the minimum of HW-accelerated transcoding while the 4790K is too old to produce even that basic experience).

thank you for the response, I was on the fence obviously. I’ll go with your suggestion.

keep in mind, the 6600 will not support 4k hevc transcoding.

you need a 7th gen cpu or newer.

but otherwise, the 6600k should be fine for a handful of 1080/x264 transcodes.

Ya, I was wondering about that, hopefully it’ll do ok on just 1080p hdr tonemapping.

Unfortunately, no, it won’t.

It can do some non-hdr hevc/x265, but It won’t do hdr at all on the gpu.

If 4k and/or HDR is your eventual goal, then you may want to start familiarizing yourself with info @ Plex, 4k, transcoding, and you and Intel Quick Sync Video - Wikipedia

you will need the 7th gen cpu (kaby/coffee/cometlake 6th gen igpu/600 series) for hdr/10bit x265.

As Teckno states,

Intel -6xxx CPUs are SkyLake - which only HW decode HEVC SDR
Intel -7xxx CPUs are KabyLake - which will HW decode HEVC HDR

When you search for comparisons, “SkyLake” vs “KabyLake” will tell you a great deal.

well, it looks like i might be putting a video card in this build after all then. thank you all for your expertise.

all of my local content direct plays, i was more worried about external users since i’m on somewhat limited upload speed @ 4MBps. But I’ll just continue to use separate libraries for 4K content that aren’t shared with external users. thanks again all.

If you can find a good price on a newer CPU for socket 1151 that might be a good alternative to an expensive discrete GPU. Quick Sync is pretty good.
