4K being played on 1080p display

Server Version#: 1.28.2.6151
Player Version#: Any I assume

I currently have my 4K and normal movies merged in one library, relying on Plex’s multiple version support to choose the correct version for the users device. For some reason, Plex direct plays 4K movies on my 1080p PC monitor through Plex for Windows. This doesn’t happen in the web app, just Plex for Windows. The only reason I could see Plex wanting to choose 4K over 1080p is my monitor supports HDR, otherwise I expect a transcode and tone mapping (or just choose 1080p instead which it’s supposed to).

I can replicate this on my PC, and also noticed a user last night had this happen - their stream seems to have gone smoothly, but this definitely isn’t an ideal situation. It’s very odd that Plex chose 4K for my friend as well as their PC doesn’t support HDR whatsoever…

I’m wondering if multiple version support is messing with the kill stream messages not working either which I created a separate post for.

Without seeing the DEBUG logs ZIP file which captures this happening, there is no way of knowing the answer to your questions.

Can you verify DEBUG logging is enabled (the default) and VERBOSE logging is disabled (also the default)

Next recreate the situation.

Download the logs from PMS

Attach the ZIP file it gives you here.

Sorry, I thought I’d posted the logs - was a different post.

I just reproduced it here, hopefully it was long enough to show in the logs. Movie is Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice.
