Currently, none of the Plex clients can select 4K SDR as a playback mode. The “Original” option plays back the 4K in HDR as the native file. Then, the next best option is 1080p SDR. So, the highest transcoding resolution is 1080p.
However, there are many devices (increasing constantly) that can display 4K resolutions, but not HDR.
Can we please get an option for 4K HDR to 4K SDR tone mapped transcoding?
Plex Web playing a 4K HDR movie using a computer that does not support HDR video connected to a 4K monitor.
Just curious, but which devices?
I cannot recall a recent 4K TV that does not support HDR10 video.
For PCs that have 4K screens but do not support HDR, Plex Desktop performs the HDR to SDR conversion, avoiding transcoding by the server.
Roku Premiere+ on a Panasonic’s first ever 4K TV that does not support HDR.
I don’t want to get rid of the TV because it supports 3D.
I have never seen that option, but I never watch Plex from a browser.
