windows plex server version 1.21.0.3711
roku Player Version#: 6.6.16.6715-c4643204c
When i play a 4k mkv movie from a USB device on my Sony Bluray 4k UHD player my Vizio TV plays it and displays it as 2160p HDR 10… Yet if i play it on my Windows Plex server it only shows up as 2160p and not HDR 10 via my Vizio tv settings display and i notice a difference in quality.
Why is plex not playing it as HDR 10 ? and I even enabled direct play in the roku plex app.
is this a known issue plex just won’t perform or process HDR quality video files ? or is there some setting i am not setting properly in the roku app player ? I just recently upgraded to a PC with a powerful CPU that would play 4K files so first time i was able to use plex and test out 4K movies. I am hard wired gig eth in my house with cat5 no wifi here.
also in roku app i tried…
direct play set to forced
allow direct streamed checked
sorry i should have been more specific my fault. so it’s a Roku 4k UHD , i have another of the same just year or 2 older . i just got it 2 weeks ago , i moved the old one to another tv which is not 4k, that’s beside the point though ;).
so anyway, i can play stuff off disney + or netflix etc on the Roku and my vizio tv picks up just the same as from bluray and shows HDR 10 as when i play my movie files from USB drive off my sony blu ray… but when i play with plex roku app just get 2160p
thanks for that link wow lots of info and i’m pretty technical, which what i say next makes me feel like a noob. i swear i had enabled direct play , so i just retested with Direct Play forced and it works !! TV says HDR 10 all that. so another question if you don’t mind.
another issue i have and it only seems to affect the same setup Roku 4k HDR, Vizio 4K tv, Vizio sound bar with wirless subwoofer (with 2 rear speakers connected to the sub) so i have 5.1 surround, also high end HDMI cables… sound bar connected to TV via optical cable… so the issue is and it’s always been there when i play 1080p movies the audio cuts our for a split 1 sec or 1.5 secs every 5 mins or so, i noticed once i was able to get the 4k movie to play as i mentioned above i tested it and it’s worse i get audio cutting out for the same 1 to 1.5 secs but it happens like every 30 to 45 secs … as i mentioned i just now am able to successfully even play 4K through plex so in the past when i was tshooting with 1080p i can go to another setup in my house where i have same roku 4k UHD, LG Tv instead that’s 1080p, and a just a vizio sound bar only (no sub or rear speakers) also connected optical to the LG tv… that LG setup never has the audio issue through plex it’s making me think it’s my stupid Vizio TV… any ideas ? i am getting a new 85 in samsung 4k TV in May so if i can’t figure out least i will be swapping that part out LOL then. just very annoying to have audio drop, it’s not the Roku though that’s what’s strange like if i play YoutubeTV or Netflix or Disney+ from the Roku on that same Vizio TV setup i described i never get audio drops so it’s just Plex and Just on that TV setup, i’m scratching my head ??
and FYI all my movie files only have AC3 or if they have Atmos and AC3, i set AC3 to be default due to my cheap audio system i have
@TeknoJunky thanks for the link/info so i figured out it was subtitles causing streaming , transcoding, not sure what, when i would start most 4k movies it would load slow stop at 33% then 90% then load and work for a few secs then again all over… then lots of times say my server was not powerful enough which was definitely NOT true. so in testing i used mkvtoolnix to remove pgs subs and vobsub (idx/sub) types… and just go with srt type that works fine , all my stuff runs great… weird when i play these from the sony blu ray via usb NO problamo… so not sure why my plex or plex in general has issues with PGS type subs and vobsub
