I have recently started to get 4K content within PMS for my watching movies. Most of the files range from about 60GB downwards… This is the kinda of media im trying to play

I have a very beefy server to run this on…
16 CPUs x Intel® Xeon® CPU E5-2650 0 @ 2.00GHz
47.96 GB RAM
10GB uplink to the switch
However the content will just not run. On the odd occasion this converts from HVEC to H264, plex seems to convert to 2mbps 1020p… is this normal
I would advise to first transcode H265 to H264, than it will work better especially if you youse encoder level 4.1 (best supported for hardware)
The stream will direct stream instead of converting, but I still got buffering issues.
Problem of H265 is that it is amazing for direct play like from a BluRay, but it takes a huge amount of CPU power to convert H265 (HEVC) to H264. My opinion there isn’t any cpu that can handle a real time transcode. Maybe the new 32 core Threadripper:p
if your files are h.265 you need to heck the level. think FireTV gen 3 only supports upto level 5.1. higher than that an it will be forced to transcode it. You can check the level using plex media server.
even if you get direct play working you may not actually be playing the 4k file in 4k on your TV.
This may sound strange, but I have found that the Plex add-in for Kodi on Fire TV is the most flexible for allowing for direct stream. It’s unfortunate because it’s not a “supported” method, requires a manual install of Kodi, and it’s not the cutting edge Plex UI, but when you’re direct streaming perfect 4K, those other items don’t matter. Wish the “supported” apps worked this easily.
Also, you can set the Plex add-in to auto launch when you open Kodi.
