Latest Update All the sudden 4k will not direct play anymore

No matter what title i play 4K HDR is getting transcoded down to 1080p. This was direct playing fine like last week the last time i played a 4k title. Checked settings and all set to maximum quality playback.

I’m using a Fire TV Stick 4k

Anyone Else having this problem

Which Server OS?
Which Server Version?
Which Client Version?
Are you using the New Player on Fire TV? If so try turning it off, it’s in the settings of the firestick “Enable New Player” turn that to off and see what happens

Windows 10
Server 1.18.7.2457
Client 7.28.0.15501

I have disabled the new play but still getting same result. In display overlay info it says 4k playback not supported on this device

I can confirm, under the same conditions (Just upgraded my server version), I get the same behavior.

Windows 10
Server 1.18.7.2457
Client 7.28.0.15501

Any other info you would need to submit a report? Do you need/require logs from both of us?

Do you have an app preference named “H.264 Level”?
Check if this is set to ‘1.0’. If it is, raise it to 5.1 or 5.2 and try again.

Mine’s already set to 5.2.

Out of curiosity though, that affects HEVC playback?

It should not, but you never know.

Please post the Plex XML info of an affected video.
Are subtitles involved?
Is the server able to transcode 4K HEVC at all?

Here’s 2 XML’s from the two I tried. They Direct Played when I played them a week or so ago.

No Subtitles

And yes, it triggers transcode for the video, but transcodes into SDR which washes out the colors.

You may want to tag this post with FireTV and Windows-Server… I can’t since I’m not the OP, but more people could see it, test it, and add more info…

Could you share the logs from the Plex for Android client? https://support.plex.tv/articles/201573117-android-android-tv-fire-tv-logs/

I have this also. H264 level is recommended as 1.0 on Fire devices, all of a sudden, but mine is still set to 5.1

I changed h264 level to 5.2. Didn’t help. Still transcoding down to 1080

Guys. The same thing is happening to me after the recent update.

What the heck is going on? I can’t play any of my 4K content, and even 1080p is grainy on and off!?

Plex fix this!!!

Sorry this is late @sixones For some reason when Otto moved it to streaming devices category I stopped being notified about it

Here’s my network logsFireTV Stick 4K Logs.txt (1.1 MB)

Edit: Not sure why there’s so much log information before I started playing it as I only enabled network logging moments before… but the issues start around 21:34 in the logs when I tried to play Ad Astra, it triggered a transcode (despite everything being set correctly to direct play), and then I stopped that and attempted Alita: Battle Angel, which also triggered a transcode (despite everything being set correctly).

Hope that helps

I’ve been reading around and this seems to be some issue with the recent update which almost forces amazon devices to transcode 4K media. I’m even having issues with 1080p. Goes grainy sometimes…

I´ve had the same Problem with grainy 1080p Movies. Changed h264 level to 5.2 in the Settings, worked for me. But i have trouble with subtitles activated on movie start (extern or internal). I get an error message.Workaround : Set Subtitles to off before movie start, then change subtitle when running.

Mine will downgrade everything to 1080p. No 4K content anymore!!

Reverted back to 7.27. I used the ADB Debugging tool. Was easy and worked perfectly.

Welcome back 4K content!
