4K Streaming Help!

Router: ASUS RT-AC87R
NAS: QNAP TS 251+
Roku Streaming Stick+

I’m having trouble streaming 4K movie files from my NAS to my TV. My NAS is hooked up to my router directly with a CAT-6 cable. I stream content to my TV from the NAS/router via the Roku streaming stick+. It is connected wirelessly to my network via the 5Ghz and 802.11ac. I figured that this setup would be enough to stream my 4K files, but when I run Plex through the Roku streaming stick+ the 4K movies time out they play for 10 seconds and then buffer and then play for 10 seconds and then crashes. I get an error message that I don’t have enough power to play the files, but I can stream 4K content on Netflix no problem. Help!!! What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

first, netflix 4k and plex are entirely NOT related.

second, if you are trying to play full 4k bluray rips, then your problem is most likely you do not have your stick plugged into an atmos receiver, your tv doesn’t support the HD audio that is included in such rips. select a different audio stream (ie 5.1 or stereo)

third, if you have subtitles enabled, they can cause problems and transcoding if the subtitles aren’t compatible with your device. disable subtitles on the plex client app settings.

forth, if your tv isn’t 4k (you didn’t specify), then plex will transcode and downscale it to 1080 or less regardless of any of the above.

finally, please read @ Plex, 4k, transcoding, and you - aka the rules of 4k - a FAQ

all of your questions should be answered somewhere in the thread.

Sony TV is definitely 4K and HDR capable. Is a 2018 model.

Roku Streaming Stick+ is plugged into HDMI input in TV directly. I got rid of my receiver and don’t have it plugged into the pass through/video switching in a receiver.

Some files are Blu-ray rips. Files did not specify whether it is atmos audio. Files are 5.1 audio. Subtitles have been removed from file with MKVToolNix.

That’s for the referral to the other threads. I’ll post something there for help.

when you are trying to stream to your roku stick/tv, monitor your plex server status and tell us or post a screenshot.

that should tell you want the plex server is doing and sending to your roku.

you can further trouble shoot by monitoring the logs as you start to stream the problem file, and look for lines that have MDE: in them to tell you why plex is deciding to transcode.

if you are having problems with non-4k rips, then you probably have other issues complicating things.

if you live in an apartment or area with a lot of wifi near by, then you may be running into wifi interference (all wifi shares the same bandwidth/radio waves).

or if your network is misconfigured, plex can think that your roku is a remote connection and try to transcode down to fit smaller internet connection.

if you have general questions feel free to ask in the other thread.

but for troubleshooting you should stick to this one, or try to search and find other threads with similar problems.

many many people come here with all kinds of weird problems so it is highly likely yours is not the first or unique.
