Documentation Update Request - Roku 4k Supported Devices

It is my understanding that the support article, " Is 4K content supported on the Roku?", is out-of-date. It was last updated in 2019.

The models listed on this page are:

  • Roku 4 (discontinued)
  • Roku 4K TV
  • Roku Premiere (discontinued)
  • Roku Premiere+ (discontinued)
  • Roku Ultra (still available)

New 4k Roku devices available, not mentioned, include (but not limited to):

  • Roku Express 4k
  • Roku Express 4k+
  • Roku Streaming Stick 4k
  • Roku Streaming Stick 4k+
  • Roku Ultra LT

Can this support article please be updated to reflect which of these new devices support Plex 4k video?

Thank you in advance.

They can all do 4k; only some can do Dolby Vision.

If you’re shopping for a Roku don’t forget to compare remotes. The better remotes weigh more and feel a lot better in the hand.

I would love to piggy back on this. I have the Roku Streaming Stick 4K which I bought specifically to be able to stream (in near future) 4K content going QNAP NAS (Plex server) → Roku Streaming Stick 4K (client) → AVR (4K) → Projector (4K).

I know that my server is unable to transcode the 4K content so my question is whether it should be able to Direct Play the 4K content if it’s H.265 encoded. Would the Roku 4K handle the H.265 decoding?

Currently I only get loading 13% and I can see my NAS is struggling to transcode it to something according to the CPU load.

What I’m hoping to find out is whether I need to shop for a standalone powerful Plex Server to handle the transcoding of 4K files.

Sorry. I know that’s a lot of IFs, but it’s a complicated system to me…

The Roku can handle H.265 video. It’s can not handle lossless audio so TrueHD tracks will need to be transcoded. Roku’s also can not do PGS or VOBSUB subtitles so make sure you use SRTs.
