4K Video Stutter on Plex Windows

Hi Guys,

I have been struggling with a stuttering 4K video playback on Plex on my new laptop. I have a HP Specter x360 15" 4K OLED, when I first received it I was upset as I couldn’t watch plex. Feels like it’s 10fps or much less. I found a topic on here and helped find one solution- get the old Plex Media Player, go into config and change OpenGL to True. That works for my Plex Media Player app. But I can’t use the Plex for Windows or the new Plex HTPC application. I tried all the solutions people said worked, even plex came out with an update for plex for windows last year to fix it. It doesn’t work. I thought maybe, just maybe, it was my Laptop, so I returned it, got my new one in and boom same thing again.

I would like to use the new software’s so I can keep updated. Anyone know anything? Any plex employee help fix this? Appreciate any help.

Thanks,

Justin

Did you try changing the video hardware decoding option? Try both on and off.

Edit - That’s the settings page for Plex for Windows. Plex HTPC has a similar option under the Video tab in settings.

Hi there @MovieFan.Plex ,

Thanks for help but it did not work - I thought it would be a hardware problem, I since then exchanged laptop in 5 times, yes 5 times, feels like insanity ! Lol. Anyways after the last time still problems I returned it. Got a new laptop, 4K OLED HDR screen, rtx 3070 laptop and an i7. Thinking for sure this would work. Same problem comes up, Can’t use plex for windows and the new HTCP kinda works, there’s a slight stutter, if I could just go into properties and activate open GL to true on HTCP like I do for “Plex Media Player” then it would work and I’d be able to keep updated.

EDIT: My new laptop is Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED XC

Both Plex for Windows and Plex HTPC are missing dependencies in the toolchain for d3d11-egl (or the older dxva2-egl) backend hw decoder; and therefore are using an inferior method, i.e. copying the decoded data back and forth between the CPU and GPU, for hw decoding. This is why the playback is choppy. There is nothing wrong with your hardware.
