Stuttering 4k videos

Hi,

All my 4k videos are stuttering (a bit) when I play them and I don’t know from where it comes! When I play the same videos on VLC (also on lan), there’s no problem! It’s also working in KODI without any issue.

Stuttering is not huge… and it’s only the video, not the audio!

I really think the problem comes from Plex server and not from the client (Plex Media Player on W10) but not able to find what!

Hardware decoding is enabled. If it’s not, stuttering is awful!

Here is my setup:

  • Synology NAS DS415+
  • Intel NUC7i3BNH
  • Denon AVR-X3300W
  • Gigabit router with CAT7 cables

Thanks for any help.

try turning off “Native OpenGL” close and reopen PMP, recheck

And a 4K display?

Kodi and VLC are FAT clients capable of using the NUC’s resources to convert Audio or Video. Plex is geared towards thin streaming clients with the server doing all the work.

Your NUC’s CPU tops out at 4096x2304@24Hz so if your media is 30/60Hz it will ask the server to convert which is beyond its capabilities.

FYI, Product brief says 4K@60Hz.

Graphics

  • Intel® HD Graphics 620
  • One HDMI* 2.0 port with 4K at 60 Hz
  • USB Type-C port with DisplayPort* 1.2

Till you click on the cpu link, then it says 4096x2304@24Hz. Intel has done this on other NUCs (Gemini Lake) where they crippled the output from the CPU, otherwise they would be excellent PMP.

hi, thanks for the reply. I already tried that and it’s worse.

but how is it possible that it’s fluid if I play the same video on VLC (also through network). Even with MPC it’s working ok.

VLC and MPC have their own codecs to decode the file using local cpu/gpu resources to produce audio+video matching your equipment. If PMP doesn’t have a profile to match the media then it asks the server to transcode it to something it can deal with but your server doesn’t the resources to deal with it.
Just a difference in design Client based versus Client + Server. The hardware capabilities are just catching up, now the software needs to.
