4K videos and Internet speeds

I can stream my 1080P videos fine on my TV but when I try streaming my new 4K videos it takes for ever to load & it buffers every 3 seconds or so. Useless. I can stream 4K movies fine from my KODI box. Is this my internet speed? I have Spectrum 200Mbps.

I don’t understand why the BIG difference??? Am I doing something wrong with my Plex Pass?

Sounds more as if your server feels the need to transcode the 4K content when you stream it from the internet.

You could check the settings of your clients… there should be an option to configure your playback quality preferences for certain environments (e.g. home network, internet, mobile access). What happens if you set internet playback to „original“ or maximum quality?

Many servers don’t handle 4K transcoding so well which results in stuttering or endless buffering. However… consider the downsides of not transcoding… you shouldn’t stream a 4K video on a mobile plan with limited download volume or bandwidth unless you want to eat up your volume in minutes

Spectrum’s 200mbit service is your supposed download speed. Your upload speed is 20mbit. A remote connection is guaranteed to force a transcode of your content, especially 4k as a 4k rip is going to be around 50gb.

Time to transfer data at your upload speed.
Speed: 20 mbps
Size: 50 GB
6 Hours, 15 Minutes and 28 Seconds

That said, it is extremely likely that your server is unable to transcode your 4k content fast enough to keep up with remote streaming, thus the constant buffering and pausing.

If I am reading your post correctly, you are streaming using the Plex client on your TV from a Plex server on the same network.

Correct? If so, please provide make/model of TV and Plex client version (see Devices). Also, what version of PMS and what platform (Windows/Linux/etc; desktop/laptop/etc; i7/Ryzen/etc)?

Incorrect? Please provide additional details on your setup, as it is unclear what devices you are using to stream movies.

Your internet speed does not matter if you are streaming locally, as all the traffic is within your local network.

As @tom80H mentioned, you may be transcoding. Look at Status → Now Playing while streaming a movie. This will tell you if you are transcoding.

Any chance you are using subtitles? If so, try playing the movie without them. Some Plex clients do not handle subtitles well, or at all. For example, enabling any subtitle, whether SRT, PGS, or VOBSUB, in the Plex client on my LG B7 OLED will immediately cause transcoding, whether streaming SD, HD, or UHD/HDR movies.

Lastly, a bit about your network. Are clients wired or wireless? Your server should have a wired Gigabit Ethernet connection and either a static IP address or one assigned using DHCP reservation by your router.

My setting was set to “convert” 2 Mbps 720P HD.

I will try again tonight to stream it on my TV.

These are only 8 minute videos of my 4-wheeling (Yamaha Grizzly 700cc Special Edition)

I hope that works…
