Streaming 4k over local network

Hi Guys,

Might be my understanding of networking (limited) but I assumed that streaming over local network (plex server on my PC streaming to my xbox)… I’ve been getting issues with buffering 4k content…
it’s as if my PC is uploading the 4k content somewhere external to then be downloaded via the xbox…

I just assumed if the server and the player are on the same local network then the speeds wouldn’t really be a factor?

to give you an idea I had the film on pause for 5 minutes… and then played the movie and it played 1 minute of it before it started buffering again, so that gives an idea of how fast it was going

Am I doing something wrong? or is my understanding just wrong?

with 4K bandwidth still can be an issue / a bottleneck.
do you have those devices in a wired network or in a WIFI? WIFI might be fit for 4K streaming by name, however it’s easy to impact the data transfer so it’s not fast enough (distance, concrete walls, any kind of interferences such as too many neighbors using the same WIFI bands – the 2.4 GHz is getting quite jammed).

however… there’s a chance this has nothing to do with your network at all but depends on the client. If the Plex client tells the sever it doesn’t support the combination of media container/codecs (video/audio/subtitle), Plex will transcode the video and that’ll eat quite an amount of performance on your server (potentially causing delays / buffering). When it comes to 4K, clients apparently still are quite picky.

Check your plex client streaming quality for local streaming.

Your set up is a PC computer (server)- X box (client app)- 4k compatible TV or Monitor, is this correct?

A couple support pages to read:

I have this exact same issue if anyone else is able to give me any other options. my wifi strength at the Xbox is around 75% so I don’t see why it should be an issue my computer is getting on in age is there anything i can do there to boost the transcode ability of it?
