4K won't direct play smoothly on 2017 nVidia Shield Pro anymore

Server Version#: 1.25.8.5663-7000 on Synology DSM7
Player Version#:8.31.2.31546 (62043fa3)
Direct playing 4K movies play for a few minutes and then stutter and become unwatchable. These movies used to play fine and still play fine on the shield through another player but not on Plex. I have tried it on both my 2017 Shield Pro and a non Pro Shield as well. These Shields are pre 2019. This also happens when playing the movie through the Plex app on my Sony A80J with Google TV.

I initially thought it was a network problem but since the movies play fine on another app other than Plex, I have determined that it is something with the Plex app.

It seems that something has changed with the last few updates that have caused this issue. Unfortunately I cannot recall the last version when it worked fine as we do not always watch our 4K movies.

Hopefully this can be fixed soon. Also, if someone could walk me through gaining access to my Shield from Windows, I can try and get a log to post.

Thanks

For movies with TrueHD audio, there are issues with the Shield. Try choosing the Dolby Digital / AC3 track if available. There are other threads regarding overall stability problems with the Android TV app. Hopefully Plex will get the kinks worked out soon.

Hi,
Looking at the version of Plex client you’re using it looks like you’re suffering from the Dolby TrueHD playback issue, there’s a thread at the top of thsi forum with 162 posts so far all with these symptoms.

Might be worth trying playing back a DTS / DTS-HD track on a movie and seeing what happens. If it plays back fine then it looks as though you have the same issue as I have.

I’ve uninstalled all releases and gone back to 5.6.1. It’s primitive but it does work until a fix comes out to rectify the Dolby playback issue.

Hope this helps.

David
