Nvidia shield constantly stopping 4k movioe playback

Server Version#: 4.69.1
Player Version#:

I recently bought the Nvidia shield tv, but it is constantly stopping playback of 4k movies from my Plex server, the Apple Tv has no problems doing so, my wi-fi is above the 600 mbps mark. is there a specific setting for the Nvidia to work with 4k streaming? the loading wheel comes up every 15 seconds or so.

Are you by any chance trying to play mp4 files with Dolby Vision data? That would explain it, as the Shield cannot handle those properly.

The problem is with any 2160p Remux file backed by me in MKV format using MakeMKV. The Apple TV plays them perfectly using the same HDMI cable, I was thinking that maybe there’s a specific set up in the menu that allows this to happen on the Nvidia Shield?

Hey Luigy.

i)Have you checked on your Dashboard if the files are being transcoded at all?
ii)Have you tried with a different cable? Remember when I moved to my Shield TV the HDMI cable needed changing despite working on previous device.

so I went ahead and did a reset on the Nvidia, used it with three different HDMI cables and on 2 different tv’s. The apple tv continues to play flawlessly in all combinations, the Nvidia refuses to play any 4k movies, it plays 1080p remuxes without a hitch. I’ve been at it for three days, I’m beginning to dislike this little box.

try use a ethernet and see how u do

using the ethernet would defeat the purpose of why i bought the nvidia.

Like the guys already said, I would use ethernet just to see if it makes a difference. After all, the Shield is one of the few gig-capable devices, so why not take advantage of that.

Make sure Plex is direct playing.

Which version of MakeMKV are you using to create your files? Can you post the media info for one of them?

confirm whether the file is transcoding or direct playing when you use the apple tv vs the shield.

if it is transcoding on the shield, look at why. you could have the shield player set to a bandwidth limitation that is causing it to force a transcode on the server. Doubt its an ethernet vs wireless issue.

Where would I find the bandwidth limitation setting, is it on the shield itself or is it on the plex app in the shield?

it is in the plex app in the shield.

once you determine if it is transcoding when playing from the shield and why (this is displayed if you look in web browser under activity or if you click playback info in the settings while watching the video on the shield) then you may have more knowledge as to what the issue could be.

Is this the Shield Pro or the “tube” model?
The tube is not suitable for “remux” 4K material, because it doesn’t work well with files of higher bitrates. (which “remux” files are usually exceeding)

I have the shield Pro. I just discovered that dts movies play just fine, it’s the trueHd that is causing the problem as it goes to trans-coding and so does the video. Is there a way to set it up that the video stays direct and where to do it?

By the way, I do not have a modern receiver that can accept dolbyTrueHd, I have a 4k display in the room, but where I have the projector I just take the HDMI cable and plug it into my Oppo player and then listen to 5.1 audio using the analog outs of the Oppo into the analog inputs of my receiver.

In that case, see here:

This is why it’s so important to be as detailed as can be with both the versions you’re using and the actual problem
