Just migrated from a DS916 to DS918 at the recommendation of others (upgraded to 2x4GB, using the synology ram). The issue I had with 1080i is completely resolved (Hooray!) However when playing to my iPhone X, 720p now buffers. This seems to be because it’s trying to transcode to HEVC. Playback of the same content to an iPad which uses h264 works flawlessly.
So, can I force encoding to h264 for all content? If not possible at the server level, is there a way to setup client profiles so that HEVC is not used? (also open to any other better options)
Uploading logs of playback.
@trumpy81 thanks for the feedback!
I rebooted everything and retested. Unfortunately no change. I can’t change the format of these as it’s using the DVR/Live TV feature of Plex. I could optimize the library but that doesn’t fix live TV.
I did test some more though. As I change the quality of the stream, it switches from “MPEG2VIDEO (hw) to h264 (hw)” to “MPEG2VIDEO (hw) to HEVC (hw)”. For 1080i source, this switches with anything higher than “1080p HD 8 Mbps”, and for 720p source, it switches after “720p HD (High) 4 Mbps”.
On iPad, it goes to h264 for all quality settings. Regardless of the device, h264 always works, while HEVC always says the server is not powerful enough and starts buffering for a long time.
Here’s screenshows of the h264/HEVC I’m seeing while streaming, both for the same video but different quality setting:

So at least it seems that I can get around this by just going to a lower (not terrible) quality setting. But it is odd that I can get higher setting to work on different devices.
Can you provide the log from the iPhone?
Of course. Here they are from the iphone, playing the same video with target of 720p and then 1080p, again it switched to HEVC encoding when targetting 1080p, causing the “server is not powerful enough” message. Thanks!PlexDebugInfo-jpirotte-5.0.3-14194 (2018-06-20 06.16.16 -0400).zip (1.2 MB)
Just wondering if the logs reveal anything. Really hoping to be able to change the destination format to h264 so it can transcode to iPhone x. Thanks!
You are running into a recent bug where PMS is trying to transcode to HEVC. This isn’t currently possible so the video doesn’t work. I do not have an ETA for a fix, but I have reported this to the dev team.
