720p vs 1080p, 4K

Hello

is it possible that plex has a higher image quality in 720p videos / movies compared to 1080p and 4K videos / movies?

the 720p movies I have here are much better at 720p resolution
does plex work better at 720p or is it my impression?

I connect the plex of my smart tv to the computer via a network cable.

thanks

Depending on the client you are using, it’s possible that 720p content is playing directly while higher resolution content is being transcoded. There can be a loss of visual fidelity due to the transcoding process.

You can see if transcoding is being performed by having a look at the Plex dashboard (make sure to click "Show Details) while viewing a movie with a perceived lower quality.

Do the same thing with one of your better quality 720p movies.

this loss of image quality
Can it occur because the transfer of data from the computer to the TV’s plex is faster at 720p than at 1080p or 4K?

Transcoding can occur for many reasons. Common ones are network bandwidth limitations and client compatibility with codecs used by the media files. Debug logs can give you a better idea why transcoding is occurring.

Did you have a look at the Plex dashboard while playing back movies displaying this behavior? Are they indeed transcoding?

so it’s possible that 720p videos have better image quality compared to 1080p and 4K

can this happen frequently?
for example: 90% of the videos?

If it’s the result of transcoding, it can happen whenever it occurs. Please keep in mind that this is all supposition on my part. You still having said if your videos are being transcoded or not.

Yes it’s possible but it depends on how things are being played. If you have a 720p video and a 720p TV, then each pixel is a 1:1 to the source. If you have a 1080p video, then it has to be scaled down to fit the 720p TV, so things won’t look as clear.

Also, as mentioned before if transcoding is involved. If you have a 720p video that is 1.8 Mbps and your quality setting is set o 2 Mbps, then that file will play as is. If you have a 1080p with a higher bitrate, then it has to be transcoded down to 2 mbps to fit your settings. This converted video can look worse than the 720p version. Same thing if the source was 4K.

However, if you have 4K video and a 4K TV and the file is not being trancoded, then this should look great. Any 720p or 1080p videos will need to be scaled up and won’t look as good.

Do you have any configuration tips on the plex for 4K Smart TV? connected by network cable to the pc?

Why did you do that? That just makes things complicated.

why you say that ?

is it more appropriate to connect the tv to the pc via Wifi?

No, you don’t connect the TV directly to the TV. You connect it to the router that the PC also connects to. Connecting the TV to the computer creates a localized network between only those 2 things. The TV won’t have internet access. You’ll have to setup other things on your PC to share the internet to that other network. It’s just a complicated mess that you shouldn’t do unless you are very knowledgeable with networking.

I’m using the router here yes

Ok, then you’re good. In most cases you don’t really need to touch any router settings unless you are experiencing a problem.

my tv is 4K

in the sense that I posted above:

does the image of a film lose quality in 1080p and 4K formats because it is more data to transmit from the pc to the TV compared to a 720p film in the plex?

No, the images should look better. If the data can’t be transferred fast enough, it will pause and buffer, but the picture should look good.

If these are looking bad, then it’s likely due to the transcoding mentioned above.
