8 bay qnap with hw transcoding

I’m looking to buy an 8-bay QNAP NAS and found these two:

TVS-873 (AMD)
TS-853A (Intel)

Does the AMD support harware transcoding if having PLex Pass?
Can I use Docker on both of them?

It looks like in the compability list that the 873 doesn’t do hw transcoding… does the cpu make up for it with sw transcoding or should i go for the 853 model?

The AMD does not yet support HW transcoding.
Work is underway to add this capability

The Intel CPUs, with Quick Sync Video (QSV), such as the J3455, are currently supported.

Use of docker requires you do the connecting work.
Docker adds too much abstraction. You are far better off with the native app.

Allright, great to hear… do you have any rough estimate when the capability may be released? Q1-Q4 2019?

TVS-873 might be what I’m going for then. As long as it can transcode one 1080 stream fine I can hold for it to be released.

Plex does not publish roadmaps or release schedules. Sorry

I had decent results with my TVS-x73 box when I was running plex on it. This thread talks about the impact of bitrate on # of concurrent streams you can handle.

I ended up buying the TVS-873e (AMD). Works like a charm but on some high bitrate movies I get the occational stutter. I solve it by lowering the bitrate a bit.

Glad to hear it is working well for you.
