Transcoding AAC 5.1 to AC3 on the fly
As many of you know, surround receiver aren't able to decode a AAC 5.1 signal, but many movies are ripped in mp4 or mvk with AAC 5.1 sound. So how do you get the surround sound encoded in the movie to play trough the receiver? Well many suggest to re encode the movie, and yes it is an option, but it takes time. The optimal option would be AAC 5.1 to AC3 on the fly. But the question here is how to do this, and are Plex able to do it??? In XBMC you have the option to select digital sound, ac3 cable receiver, wupti now you receiver shows, Dolby Digital (AC3) when playing AAC 5.1. I have tested this with a AAC 5.1 mkv speaker testfile. So the XBMC does an AAC 5.1 to AC3 transcoding on the Fly.
THIS feature would be so nice in PLEX. I hope PLEX will include AAC to AC3 on the fly in the follwing upgrade, as almost all new movies are rippede in mp4 or in mkv package with AAC sound.
