Able to direct play hevc, but only briefly!?

The desktop client is streaming from a windows server, and it is using the desktop version of plex, designed for windows.

The desktop client (not local to the server) seems to be able to briefly play the media, (inconsistently starting as direct play, sometimes), and then throwing a error: Error code: 4294967279
Before it begins transcoding.

Once it begins transcoding, the playback is extremely choppy. If the desktop client uses the browser client, while it does transcode, the playback is not choppy.

Any clue?
