I just have to get this out there. I have grown tired of having to launch media outside of Plex when viewing on my desktop, because the wife always occupies the TV.
Quality will, seemingly at random, decide to go to turd mode. Sometimes relaunching the app will let me view it as intended, other times it just doesn’t happen.
I just installed Plex on Kodi, and while I don’t care much for the app compared to Plex native, at least it lets me view my content.
What’s going on? Is it codec licensing issues or something else afoot?
Recently I had a similar issue with Plex clients, specifically my sister being unable to view a movie in H265 on her Apple TV.
We tested with Infuse and everything played back flawlessly, because it could actually direct-play as it had been instructed to do.
Should I just expect this to never get better? I’m not against all the streaming-focused initiatives, but there seems to be a severe lack of attention paid to basic functionality at this point frankly.
Mind sharing some more details?
I suppose the version of the Plex client does matter in this case (I’ve seen users with PMS 1.18.6 claiming this is the latest version).
There’s some other useful information when it comes to troubleshooting
Playback details from the Now Playing dashboard; primarily if the stream is considered Local, Remote or Indirect and if there’s any transcoding
It’s not consistent. Standard mkv H264 content will one day transcode (when viewing in dashboard) - and another day directly play. Hell I’ve even experienced the desktop client ■■■■■■■ it up, while the web client on the same machine would display fine.
I have set all settings to maximum, as my desktop should be able to handle anything thrown at it… I cannot find any logical reason behind it.
It’s frustrating having to fire up MPC or VLC to view content since my primary reason for using something like plex is to track progress for shows.
I usually use subtitles, when available, so obviously that throws some transcoding in to the mix. One solution could be to let the client download the .srt locally for playback maybe. I don’t know. It just seems like anything other than official plex clients performs better.
