AC3 5.1 audio issues

Today I noticed an issue with playing AC3-encoded movies on my AppleTV through PlexConnect. After some experimentation, here’s what I learned:

  • The issue is that audio keeps cutting in and out. When it cuts in, it appears to be stuck at the place where it cut out, not the current location.
  • The issue doesn’t seem to happen if I start a movie from the beginning, only if I resume playing.
  • The issue does not seem to affect all files. It does not appear to affect Harmy’s Star Wars despecialized editions, which are MKV files, but do affect some AVI files I’ve got. One such is Big Buck Bunny, a free movie available here: https://peach.blender.org/download/
  • The issue doesn’t affect any clients that I’ve tried that connect to Plex directly (iOS, web).
  • I’ve isolated the issue as best I can, and I can say it’s not my receiver. Still could be my TV; I’d need to get another TV in the house to check.

The fact that it only happens when resuming, and only on AVI files, but not when playing files directly from Plex without PlexConnect, makes me think that PlexConnect is somehow involved.

I’m running version 0.5-dev of PlexConnect, with Plex Server 0.9.12.19, and AppleTV 7.2.

I wonder if anyone might have had such an issue with their own PlexConnect setup, or perhaps can give me advice on what else to look for.

Tried a few more MKV files, and indeed, it doesn’t seem to happen. Given that MKV and AVI are just containers, I wonder what else I should be looking at.
