AC3 being transcoded to OPUS when optical is selected...back again

Server Version#: current stable
Player Version#: current stable build from play store

The issue with Plex on Android TV transcoding AC3 to OPUS, even though pass-through optical is selected(and changed back to HDMI after selecting formats), is back again.

My setup is TV optical going to an older surround that only does optical.

I have to select optical in Plex passthrough setting, uncheck DTS because my TV only does ac3 over optical, and then set passthrough back to HDMI. This has always resulted in ac3 only being sent to my surround. It’s back to transcoding it to OPUS again.

In the past I’ve seen Plex devs put out an APK with this fixed. Is there one out there right now? I can’t find any new posts about this. Really frustrating to see this continue to keep coming back.

EDIT: It seems we need a checkbox list of audio formats when HDMI is selected, just like appears when OPTICAL is selected in passthrough options.

@sixones I know in the past you’ve said it was being looked into to add the checkbox selection list to HDMI passthrough. Is that still being looked at?

Why do you change it back to HDMI passthrough? Why not keep it at Optical passthrough?

I’m currently using using Plex on the Chromecast with Google TV with Optical passthrough and both AC3 and DTS are enabled and it works great. Always transcodes to AC3 unless it’s DTS.

Currently on the latest PMS Beta 1.30.1.6497 and Plex for Android TV 9.13.0.37280.

When I change it to optical I have never been able to get my TV to output sound through the optical to my surround system. It’s a 2007 Vizio TV so that’s probably making my end of things a little goofy, but regardless it had been working. Going to optical first and unchecking DTS and then switching pass through back to HDMI was previously making Plex send AC3 to the TV which would then get sent out my TV’s optical port to my surround system. Now they are sending opus which gets turned into 2.0.

I’ve spoken with another person now that has had this same problem before and they just confirmed it is back again for them as well. Looks like the last update must have broke it so I’m going to roll back as soon as I can figure out where the old version archive is at again.

It seems like the thing that would solve the whole problem is just giving that same checklist of supported audio formats when HDMI pass through is selected. Just let me uncheck everything except AC3 and I would imagine it should be a done deal.

When you select and use Optical in the settings with only AC3 active what ends up being the problem?

When you select HDMI the codecs you select under Optical have no impact as the HDMI connection tells us what codecs are supported and the Optical settings are ignored.

We havent changed how HDMI or Optical selects codecs in a while now, so I imagine something else has updated which has caused the problem to reoccur.
