Hello everyone
On android TV when I enable passtrhough hdmi, plex transcodes AAC to Opus whereas my amplificator supports it. It works fine on WebOs it direct plays and I have 5.1 working great but not on Android TV.
And it really bothers my friend who only has Android Tv because the transcode provokes srt to ass transcodes (again here no idea why…) and misshandles the subtitles timing display which makes it very short and impossible to follow…
Does someone have the same issue or even better solved it ? ahah
Do you have both TVs connected to the same amplificator? I’m guessing you are referring to a receiver but I love this word so I’m going to use it.
Not all amplificators support 5.1 AAC. Which one do you have? If it’s not supported, it’s possible the LG is converting the audio itself to something the amplificator does support.
Would need more details and a look at the Plex Android TV logs to see what it is reporting to the app as being supported.
I have a yamaha htr-2071. The TV is connected via HDMI ARC to the amplificator and the Google Tv is connected directly to the amplificator.
After looking to it closer. I found that it was my TV encoding the AAC before sending it to the ampli even when I choose passthrough it’s weird cause the ampli seems to not be able to decode aac.
I understand my misunderstanding but the thing I don’t understand is why Plex is also converting srt to ass when audio provokes the transcode, why it can’t just let the srt direct stream also ? I didnt find any answer on this on the forum
I should have mentioned this earlier. If you are connected via HDMI arc, that’s not passthrough. For a TV running Android TV passthrough only works for optical. You need an Android TV box (like the Shield) for HDMI passthrough to work.
When a file isn’t direct played, it switched to a streaming protocol called HLS. The Android app has an issue where srt subtitles get out of sync when using HLS. We switch to ass, which allows th subs to stay in sync. Converting srt to ass is trivial so it shouldn’t cause any issues.
While playing the movie, go to the playback settings. There should be a “subtitle style” option to change the color. That only works with external subtitles. If they are embedded with the video file, that option isn’t available.
