I tried watching a movie yesterday (Gangs of New York). It is an mp4 file with AC3 Dolby Digital audio. There should be no trans coding at all to play on the PS4. It is coming from my QNAP NAS. There was no audio coming out at all. I tried the Plex web app on my computer and it played fine with audio. I went back to the PS4 and played a different movie…and audio played fine. I went back to the original movie and couldn’t get it working. I ended up disabling the AC3 feature under settings (which made no sense, as it was an AC3 encoding for audio)…and the audio worked. This also happened on the 2nd movie we watched (Lincoln) which was an AAC 2.0 audio encoding.
I never had to do this before and never had any issues like this. Did something change or is there a bug?
Just so everyone knows…I noticed another issue. I was playing a movie last night and noticed that the audio was very low, including the sub channels. I have bass shakers and a subwoofer and both were extremely weak. A few months ago, I had changed my PS4 audio setting from Dolby Digital to Linear PCM so there would just be passthrough and my receiver would decode the audio. I assumed that would be the better option, especially with the files I was playing being Dolby Digital AC3 already. Anyways, so I changed this back to Dolby, and the bass and audio went back up to normal levels. I am noticing some conflict with the AC3 setting on the PS4 Plex App and the Audio configuration of the PS4 itself. I didn’t do too much more testing to verify it, but hopefully this helps with figuring out what the issue is and hopefully getting a fix/work-around for this as soon as possible. I love my Plex App on my PS4 and would love this to get worked out asap…
