I am using my Ps4 with the audio set to bitstream (Dolby) and connected to my receiver via digital optical out. When playing a video with ac3 audio I get no sound output when using the early access version of the new ps4 Plex app.
As a matter of fact this has been broken in the PS4 app since about August of 2019. The workaround in the previous version of the app was to disable ac3 audio support in the plex app settings, and let the audio transcode to aac, however this option does not appear to exist in the early access version of the new ps4 app.
Can you please correct this issue to allow ac3 audio to play when the ps4 is set to bitstream (Dolby). If I can provide any additional info please let me know.
Would also greatly appreciate this. And I’m really wondering why the option to disable ac3 audio has disappeared. I know PS5 is coming out and support for the PS4 app will be nearing end-of-life, but this is just about the only essential feature that’s missing from the app as-is.
For people having the same problem and coming here through google, a temporary fix is:
Go to settings for the movie you want to watch (“More” button on the movie page and select “Settings”)
disable both “Allow Direct Play” and “Allow Direct Stream”.
This will force Plex to transcode the audio channel from AC3 to something PS4 does support (AAC, most likely) and audio will work. Note that you might also get away with just disabling “Allow Direct Play”, but I have seen instances where this only transcodes the video channel, and leaves the audio channel intact (thus still sending the incompatible AC3-encoded channel).
This is a temporary workaround, but not optimal, because these settings are on the movie level, i.e. you have to do this each time you want to watch a video file with an AC3-encoded audio track.
