I’ve been trying to find this, but haven’t come across anything. What happens in handbrake if you select “AC3 Passthru” where the source file is DTS 5.1 channel? will it be transcoded to AC3 5.1 or what will happen? Can I only select “AC3 Passthru” with a AC3 source file?
It’s my understanding based on what I’m doing to have all my files be in an AC3 format. Any handbrake guidance is greatly appreciated!
New Windows Version of HB is all messed up. I HIGHLY recommend sticking with 0.10.5. HIGHLY.
Under 0.10.5:
You can’t pass thru an audio track that doesn’t exist.
If you want to ‘transcode’ a new audio track while it’s in Handbrake have the DTS track active on the left and in the center select AC3, then select your bit rate and finally in the downmix section select 5.1 - like this:
I have no idea if you can do this in 1.3 (or whatever). Until they fix the custom anamorphic area for DVDs I’m standing pat.
The Handbrake Guide in my sig has more handy tips.
Alternately, and what I do so I can deal with the original audio once, I autopass thru everything, then run it through Xmedia Recode to:
Copy Video
Convert Audio to the format I want while bringing the levels up to 89db, so I can hear the dialog (strangely, I find this is important), selecting the mixdown options and bit rates I want at that time. Also at this time you can Copy the original audio to track 2, for instance, for safe keeping (while adding a lot to it’s file size, of course) - if you find that’s necessary or convenient. The above will only take a minute or two. Worth it.
You can create 20 audio tracks in that one pass if you want to. I don’t know why you would, but the point is XR is very handy.
