Access Plex server locally through AppleTV or any Plex app not possible

Server Version#: 1.42.2.10156
Player Version#: 1.110.0.351-4e48eb83

Okay so I cannot seem to access the local server (LOCAL ONLY). I can go into the web app through the browser without issue. The reason I want to access it local only is because I don’t have a high enough upload bandwidth through my ISP to stream high quality through the public servers.

Here’s my setup:

  • I have the server running on a Linux host and accessible without a problem. I’ve logged in and have access to all of my media (through the public proxy).
  • The server is on a VLAN that is separate from some other devices that need access to the server.
  • I’ve set up explicit allow rules for this server to be accessed by other VLANs.
  • I’ve set up uPnP, mDNS, ans IGMP proxy. accross all vlans. and have verified connectivity.
  • Local network subnets (with netmask) are added in a comma separated list on the local server settings (both in the local network section and the no-auth section).

My problem:

  • All plex apps (Windows, Apple TV, IOS) will not access locally.
  • Signed out, will not detect server.
  • Signed in, will only access server through the public IP forcing bad quality.

My Questions:

  • Can I make it work locally? If so how?
  • Could I just specify the server IP somehow? if not, WHY NOT?

Plex isn’t designed to be 100% offline, but for your purposes, local streaming+basic internet access should be enough. See Plex Dashboard says I'm remote - #2 by OttoKerner as a starting point.

As listed in my 5th bullet point, I have gone through the steps defined in that post. I have also verified that I can connect to the server (without logging in) from a different VLAN, through the web interface. The app, however, refuses to do that. So it’s CERTAINLY possible to connect and stream to local devices across vlans, but for some reason this is not possible through the app???

Why are opposed to logging into the app? Once logged in it will stream over the LAN not the WAN.

EDIT, saw your note about being signed in. What subnets are you using?

I am not opposed to logging in on the app. I was informed by various forum posts that it would help to use no-auth. I have since tried both staying logged out and logging in to the app and have not been able to connect to the server directly from my AppleTV. Miraculously (I have no idea how), I have been able to connect to it using the windows app (which is also on a different VLAN), but I still cannot connect from the apple TV.

The subnets are 10.0.0.0/24,10.0.5.0/24,10.0.10.0/24 also that listing is exactly how I have it in the config under “LAN Networks” and “List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth”.
