Plex.tv issues even when trying to watch plex locally

Server Version#: 1.25.6.5545-c8bd13540

To preface this, yes, I realise plex.tv is currently having issues, that’s why I am creating this topic

Every time plex.tv has issues, I am unable to access my local Plex library which is running off of a local server.

When I head on over to ‘ip:32400’, or fire up the Windows 10 Plex client, or remote desktop into my server which hosts Plex and go to ‘127.0.0.1:32400’ the issue is the same.

I just get a spinner, then it’ll throw up the usual plex.tv issue, and then sometimes it’ll show me the Plex interface but with a padlock next to everything, and if I click on say ‘TV Shows’ it’ll tell me not authorised.

I would like to continue using Plex locally like I always do across all devices (Web browser, Apple TV app, Android App, Win10 app, etc…) but not be hindered in any way with accessing any of my local content.

Screenshots:

What I normally see when plex.tv is having issues (This is from the local plex server, but the screen is the same even on a different device on the same network as the server): 45a66bc772.png (1920×932) (puu.sh)

What I sometimes see when it finally decides to show me the interface: 85a11fb27e.png (1810×735) (puu.sh)

What I see when I click on ‘TV Shows’: 75ce1f00b6.png (1814×741) (puu.sh)

Having the EXACT same issue.

I shouldn’t have to go through an outside source to access a server program that’s running on the same computer I trying to access it from. My internet is working fine and my local network is ok. Been using Plex for years and have a Lifetime Pass. I just want to access the settings on my server and can’t even do that.

None of that is my issue.

I don’t use fast user switching.
My Plex server has a static IP, always has had one ever since I built the Plex server over 10yrs ago.
Secure Connections is and has always been set to ‘Preferred’.
I also set the ‘List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth’ a few months back when I first encountered this issue, it’s set to ‘192.168.234.0/255.255.255.0’ since that is whta my network runs as.

Despite all that, when the plex.tv api starts going belly-up, I am unable to talk to my plex server using plex-web either via a remote computer on the same network accessing it as ip:32400 or via the server with PMS physically installed on it using Chrome.

What I would love, is for some tick box or something under the ‘Server’ settings, where I could tell it ‘Never go out to plex.tv at all under any circumstances if the clients are on the local network’.

To have my local server go down because plex.tv has gone down is just not the right thing to do.

You can setup local authentication but then that will disable users and everyone at home will access to everything. So not good if you have kids and you have material you do not want them to see.

There is no real solution with Plex.

Plex.tv was down last night and we had no access to our own local material. That’s the way it is. Plex invented Self-hosted as a service.

You can try Emby of Jellyfin instead of Plex. Both projects seem to listed to their customers, unlike Plex.

Not really a problem in my case!

I live alone, the bachelor life is the life for me

When family visits, they don’t use Plex, and I have remote access disabled.

There’s an existing feature suggestion to implement functionality to address this problem (local auth). If you haven’t already, I’d suggest voting over there.
