Accessing plex remotely on public Wi-Fi

Hi

If I connect to Plex via remote access without a VPN on public Wi-Fi will this leave a vulnerability in my NAS server as the Plex is stored on my nas server

I want to access my plex on holiday on public Wi-Fi but I am worried about the security risks.

My VPN provider has told me that I cannot access Plex via them without a dd-wrt router

Any help

If you are using a Plex client and check that you have a secure connection, you should be fine.

Not sure how it goes in the UK, but here in America it’s very likely they won’t let you stream on Public WiFi… that might keep somebody off FacePlant, so we can’t have that, can we?

It’ll either work, or it won’t.

You don’t need a VPN with Plex. Period.

Isn’t your Plex server already open to the internet? I like most people open port 32400 from the internet so I can access my libraries when away.

Using any normal VPN in that scenario would be pointless. As the traffic to Plex is protected by TLS all somebody monitoring would see would be the endpoints.

If I was super paranoid then I wouldn’t open the port like that, then use a private VPN to my router (dd-wrt would be an option) then you could access the server as if it was at home.

‘Most’ people do, I imagine.
I opened another port - just 'cause. I also use a VPN, but it’s doing split tunneling to throw everything Plex around it. Plex is secure enough as it is. I don’t need a belt and suspenders.

I advise users from doing this. Pick another port, any port besides 32400. Why make it easy for someone to ping your PMS.
