I started to use Plex and I really like it.
One of my friends asked me if we can “join” our plex servers, so he invited me to his plex server. My problem is, to make this work proparly I either have to enable ‘Remote Access’ and use the Relay server from Plex, or I have to open ports.
Both things have some downsides, open port has some security risks and the ‘Relay server’ limits my thoughput.
So the perfect solution is a site-to-site VPN between my firend and me. But I can’t tell Plex, that an other Plex server should be added with a “IP”, it only works with the invite over the Account, which I don’t want.
Has anyone an idea, if it’s possible with a site-to-site VPN?
If you can connect your two networks in such a way, that your Plex clients can reach the remote server by its local IP address, you should be good.
If I get your answer right, with this approach I have to switch between the different Plex servers (logout on one server, than login on another one).
But I would like to have it the same way, as if I would invite someone with his Plex Account like this:
Btw. there hasn’t been a single confirmed case where a Plex server has been hacked over its exposed public port.
Even if this is true, an open port is always a security risk, if I can minimize the number of ports I have to open on my firewall, I would like to do that.
No. Nothing changes.
All Plex clients are trying the local address of a server first and then “fall back” to its public address(es). So if you have a working routing between your local networks, all should work as usual.

It works now! I can confirm, that with a correctly setup VPN you can access other Plex servers without the need of opening any Ports or relying on the Plex relay-server.
