Activities on media are not being saved

Starting half a year ago my plex server stopped logging activities on media (except “You Watchlisted”), I’ve gone through all of the settings and didn’t find any related setting off.

What exactly do you mean with “activities”?
Do you mean this feature: https://support.plex.tv/articles/activity-feed/ ?
If so, it requires Discover to be activated. https://support.plex.tv/articles/discover/
Which in turn only works if you are using libraries with the modern metadata agents.

Yes, I mean activity feed.

  • Discover is activated
  • Metadata agents are “Plex Movie” (not legacy) and “Plex Series”

Did you disable https://support.plex.tv/articles/sync-watch-state-and-ratings/ ?

Are you testing this while using your server admin account, or have you switched to one of your managed Home users?


I’m using the server admin account.

What I can’t understand is why I’m seeing watchlisting activities but nothing else

Have you tried a different Plex client, like Plex for Desktop instead of Plex Web?

Or do you remember setting up restrictive filter rules in your firewall/router/DNS resolver?

The feature doesn’t work on any of the following clients:

  • Android
  • Apple TV
  • Web Browser
  • Windows Desktop

Inside the network and outside of it.

It does sync watch state and rating on every device, it just doesn’t log it on the activity feed

Do you have something like Privoxy or Pi-hole in your network?

No, and the feature doesn’t work also when accessing the server locally

It couldn’t anyway, as it lives completely on plex.tv.
I’ve asked around and the consensus was that it must have to do with the internet connection you are using. Something on it appears to block the relevant accesses to plex.tv.

Maybe you can see some of these calls failing when you open the developer tools of your web browser and access the playback history in your profile page.
It could provide some clues about what is failing, and maybe why.

If it was being blocked somehow, wouldn’t it affect the watchlisting activity as well?
I think the key for solving it is to understand the difference between them.

UPDATE: After two weeks, it spontaneously started working again without any intervention.
