I have run the following commands to change the shields launcher resolution via ADB to increase my GUI resolution to 4K:
wm size 3840x2160
wm density 640
Everything else runs smooth but Plex. It will hang and crash randomly.
Maybe after watching half a dozen movies or tv shows it will become unresponsive.
Remote wont work and playback will stutter for about 30 seconds until it also becomes unresponsive. Sometimes I will get lucky and the Plex app will crash back to the launcher. but usually it will go back to the Plex menu and crash until I hard reset the shield.
Can anyone shed some light on why this is happening in the Plex app and if the developers might be able to release a fix for it. Everything looks so great in 4K that I don’t want to have to go back to a 1080p GUI.
I understand it isn’t designed to do that.
But all other applications work fine when upscaled.
I was just after some input as to why Plex would be having a heart attack randomly and crashing?
I know you guys wont bother trying to find a fix, if Android/Google are not worrying about creating a 4K UI then I don’t think other app developers have any interest either.
I find it rather strange that we are still stuck in the stone age of 1080p.
Once you have upscaled to 4K you don’t ever want to look at the blurry Poster pics in plex again.
It is just ugly to look at.
So while I know it isn’t officially supported, would you have any insight on why Plex might be throwing tantrums and crashing randomly when entering or exiting a movie?
Thanks for your time BTW
But if you are upscaling the GUI, that is the same as the TV upscaling from 1080p to 4K. I’d be surprised if you actually see a difference.
Plex is a highly graphic intensive program, probably more than anything else you have. The graphics on the Shield may not be able to handle Plex’s UI in 4K.
Alternatively, you should check and make sure that you’ve disabled refresh rate and resolution switching in the Plex app.
Thanks for replying so fast!
I did have them disabled. but have since turned on Resolution Switching as it may stabalise the change from the UI to the Player by giving it a few seconds of black screen while it runs the switch.
So far I have changed the wm density to 680. which may make it more stable also. its the max I can do before the posters start to overlap. I was thinking having a low number might have caused issues.
So far from those few changes it seems a lot more stable and crashes have gone from happening after half a dozen video plays to maybe every 15 or so.
Also It seems to just hang the app now and eventually force close it to the launcher menu.
before it would crash so badly that Plex would be unresponsive and the shield would need re-booting.
You also state “But if you are upscaling the GUI, that is the same as the TV upscaling from 1080p to 4K. I’d be surprised if you actually see a difference.”
And I beg to differ. I can easily see that it renders in a higher resolution. My eyes don’t lie.
Even the launcher icons are rendered in more pixels. The Google play store is also rendered at a higher resolution after making these changes.
If you have a shield feel free to also run the adb commands and see for yourself the massive change it makes.
