I want to find out how to restrict a remote user from seeing other users on the login screen.

You should not invite those friends into your “Plex Home”. That should only be used for people in the same household (like actual family).

Just invite them as “Friends”…

I am still new to Plex, so I don’t understand a lot of this… I have all of my movies, but more importantly tens of thousands of Digital images. My plan is to allow remote access to my family, but I would prefer that when they use whatever app they have, that they just log into the folders that I have set up for them. I also have created one use that I call Home and want that to be open at home with NO remote access and no requirement to use a pin login it. But, when I set up my sister to have access to my shared folders, the first thing she sees is ALL of the users including the Home user. So, I am struggling on how to do all of this.

It’s about how you’re sharing those libraries with them. Make sure to use Add a Friend (not Invite Home User or Create Managed User).
From what I remember there’s also an invite into your Plex Home checkbox when you’re adding them as friends… make sure to keep that disabled.

Okay, so now I have created an “Add Friend” user and he is NOT on my “HOME” page. So, how do I get it to work where he goes right to the selected shares? Right now, I can get it so he goes right to https://app.plex.tv/desktop, but he still has to sign in and he is using Roboform to do auto login.

And then secondly, how can I hide the admin user (myself) from his account and other Plex servers when he clicks on MORE

Not sure I can follow your point?!
As this friend wants to use their Plex account to access whatever libraries have been shared with them… certainly they’re required to sign-in to that account. That doesn’t seem wrong to me
Is there a problem with a different/wrong account being stored in RoboForms (e.g. yours)?

What do you mean by they see your admin account when clicking on More?
I suppose you’re referring to the library navigation. If you click More you’ll see a list of all libraries shared with you, grouped by their server. The server “header” is usually accompanied with your account picture.
Nobody’s actually seeing your admin account.

If you’re sharing with someone and don’t want them to know it’s you you might be sharing with the wrong kind of friends

I could be just confused. Here is what I would like to do and maybe tackle this one at a time.

(1) As Administrator of my different Plex servers, I appear on the main login screen as Admin (with a little crown). In settings it lists me under the “HOME USERS”. If I go to the far right and place my mouse over the red “X”, it says “leave home”. I am hesitant to do this as I am not sure if it will remove me completely. And of course I want to be able to administer the servers. And even if I am out of the house and go into my Plex app on my iPhone, it shows me there. I really would NOT like to do any admin away from home, so if I “leave home” will this take me away all together?
(2) When at home I have not problem currently, using my iPhone Plex app to access my shares as I have set up a managed user in “HOME USERS”, but I have some concerns there since I am not using a pin. BTW - I am considering two-factor on ALL users. but when I am at home, I would like NOT to have to do this. So I have set up this third user using an outside email account that allows me to get in from outside. But there in lays the problem expressed earlier.
(3) My outside account using the Plex app still shows my “Home Users”. What I would like from the outside is to see just that account that allows me in. NO admin, two-factor authorization and inability to see any other servers that I (ADMIN) might have running.

Am I just asking too much? This world is full of people just itching to hack and I want to be as secure as I can be (considering that there are some people that still might get around things).

I don’t think you’re asking too much but I consider there’s some severe misconceptions about how Plex handles users.

Therefore… as you proposed: let’s tackle those one at a time.

  • If you create managed users in your Plex Home (e.g. for your kids…), those users don’t have a Plex account of their own. They’re still using your account. That’s why you always need to sign into a new device with your account before one of your managed users can then log in with their PIN.
  • Every user inside your Plex home can switch to “impersonate” another member of that Plex Home; all they need to know is the PIN. If you haven’t set a pin, every member of your home can simply click on Switch User and select your user.
    • it’s possible to enable a function called Automatic sign-in on some apps. That can make sense if you have managed accounts for your kids and they have their own phone/tablet.
See the description for Settings > Account > Automatically Sign In in the support article for the Plex settings for iOS
  • Nobody but the admin can manage the server – however if you have not set a PIN, each of the members can “choose to be you” and then manage the server (therefore you should ALWAYS set a PIN when you start creating managed users or inviting regular users into your Plex Home)
  • The admin of a Plex Home cannot technically “leave” that home. If the Admin leaves the home, this will basically “collapse” that home and delete all managed users or remove other members from the Plex Home. Managed users can be created anew but you cannot restore their watch history etc.!
However… you’ll still be the admin of your server.
    https://support.plex.tv/articles/203888038-how-do-i-leave-a-plex-home/
  • Even if you don’t want to do any admin tasks on your server while away from home, that doesn’t make a difference to Plex. Your account is linked to the server as an admin… so as long as you can connect to the server, your account is being the admin.
    • I’ve seen people creating a 2nd regular Plex account for themselves and share some of their own libraries with that account to watch their media (e.g. if they don’t want to see their kids’ libraries in their own apps). Just keep in mind that a separate account is just that… a separate account. You won’t see your viewing history from that other account (or vice versa).
Usually I’d call that “not necessary” – then again it might be the answer to your question #3. Catch: if it’s a different account, your Plex Pass privileges won’t apply! Also… this doesn’t stop you from signing into your main account with all its admin privileges to your server from outside your home network.

I will have to digest this for a while. My Admin account does have a pin so I am not really afraid of others trying to use it. However, I see what you mean by a second NON-admin type user sharing (I assume are) their shares from the Admin. If that is what you mean, then I will need to look into that.

One thing. I created a secondary account and just allows me to get to my shares, this is that “add Friend” process I was telling you about, but again when I run the Plex app on the iPhone, I can’t get to a login screen that will allow me to use it. It continues to display the “Home Users”.

I really appreciate all of the support that you have provided and am sure that eventually, I will figure this all out. Doing on the weekend is about the only time I have to deal with this.

on the iPhone:

  1. open the Plex for iOS app
  2. go to Settings > Account
  3. click on Sign Out
  4. sign back in with the alternate account

AWESOME - That takes care of one of them. Truly, Thank You.

I will continue to check out your other comments and suggestions and see how I do.

opps one more problem with my “HOME USER”. I created a user that has only a few shares, but I want to allow it to have “Plex Movies & Shows and News”, but I can’t seem to get them to appear for some reason.

Under Admin, I have gone into Settings . Users & Sharing and see the user but am unable to add those two options.

Plex Movies & Shows are not libraries in the original sense. This is instead managed in the Online Media Sources section

  1. open https://app.plex.tv/desktop#!/settings/online-media-sources
  2. click Edit next to Movies & TV
  3. set the dropdown to Enabled
    • Enabled = available to you and your managed users
    • Disabled for Managed Users = available for you but not your managed users
    • Disabled = disabled for good
  4. click Save Changes

Same for all other online media sources.
If it’s not immediately showing for your managed user you might want to check out the main navigation and click More to see if it’s simply unpinned.

you are AWESOME. Right on! Thanks again. I will let you rest for a while.

Here are a few questions for you.

Is there anyway that Plex can be set to zoom in on photos? This would REALLY be nice.

Is there anyway that you can adjust a player to darken a photo for viewing. I have scanned thousands of negatives and slides and using my Plex app on the iPhone and any Plex app on Mac and PC, ALL of those display the scanned images perfectly. But on a TV using Plex app on Apple TV, they ALL are too bright. Am I missing anything?

sorry… never used Plex to manage/display my photos.

I am sorry to use this post, but I am trying to open another post to gather information about something else now and it won’t let me create a new post.

Why NOT?

Works ok for me… keep in mind you need to open new topics inside a category – you cannot create one e.g. from the Latest section.

Server deployed in the main hard, who broke down and flex the server linked to the recovery even if the list to suggest it is not working, that data is loaded. Can you do this?
