Hi everyone,
I’m not sure if this is the right place to ask this question but maybe you can still help me.
I have my own plex server with a home user that I share with, However for half of the year I live in another place where we have another plex server that isn’t run by me and this library is shared with me. The problem is now when I try to add another home user to my own server back home to allow this person that lives in my home to watch Plex I’m unable to do so because the admin of my home group is now the account which is the owner of the plex I currently use. Is there a way to separate this somehow so my home server is used by me as owner and two home users, but I sstill have access to the plex at my current location?
You can leave that other user’s home. You should still remain linked as friends and your friend can share their libraries with you.
I have what may be a similar question, not sure. I use the Plex interface/client on Roku and it was initially set up by a relative who gave me access to all the content on his Plex server (in another city). I recently created my own Plex server and want to be able to use my Roku Plex app to let me easily switch between the content of these two servers. I can see how to “Switch User” but that doesn’t switch the server. So far I haven’t found a way to be able to do that without signing completely out and then having to re-input a new authorization code each time I want to switch servers. That isn’t practical as I’d have to bug my relative to do the re-authorization code thing every time I switched between servers. Does anyone know how to do this?
Ask you relative to invite your new Plex account (the one you bought the Plex Pass for) to his server.
Tell him to NOT add this account into his Plex Home.
From then on, only use your new plex account on all your devices and on your server.
But, assuming my relative does this, how would I, on my end, switch between the two server accounts?
You don’t need to switch. Your account has then access to both servers. One server as the owner, and the other server as a “shared user” or “Plex Friend”.
You can use the left sidebar in any Plex app to pick the libraries from both servers and “pin” them.
Thanks so much, but a follow up question. He and I use very different Library naming methods. If all our libraries showed up in a single long list, it would get hard to find things. Is that how it would work or could his libraries and mine somehow be segregated?
They are segregated by server name and user name in the full ist (that is when you click on MORE in your side bar).
After you pin libraries from more than one server to your side bar, the user name of the shared server owner is shown under the library name.
(And if a user happens to have more than one server, you will even see the server’s “friendly name” there.)
Thank you SO much. That is really helpful. They should put that in some online explanatory materials.
Unfortunately, on my end, although I can see how it allows me to switch between servers, each time I attempt to do that, it requires a log in on the plex.tv website using a code sent to the server owner. So, for example, if I am showing the contents of my own server on my plex.tv, and I want to switch back to view the contents of my relative’s server, I still have to input the confirmation code which is sent to my relative, not to me. That is what I am hoping to not have to do each time I switch between servers.
Is there a way to do this?
Also, you previously suggested that I “Ask your relative to invite your new Plex account (the one you bought the Plex Pass for) to his server.
Tell him to NOT add this account into his Plex Home.”
I don’t know what it means to “invite” my Plex account onto his server, so I can’t communicate that to him. However, he told me that he can see my account on his server even though I never took any steps to authorize that. Spooky. I really need some more help in understanding all this.
The link in Otto’s initial response explains how they can invite you as a friend and share libraries with you.
BTW… you can also initiate the invitation from your end. Once you’re listed as friends, they can grant you access to their libraries (some or all).

Thanks. The problem is that this started by my relative being at my house and setting up his plex account on my TV. I later added my own Plex account. I don’t know how to change it from what he set up to him then inviting me as a guest user.
- Open the Plex app on that TV
- Depening on the app, click on the account or settings icon and select
Sign Out - Sign into the app using your account credentials
On a smart TV, this will most likely involve entering a 4-digit PIN displayed on the TV into a web browser via Link | Plex).
I’m close to giving up. I invited myself and now I see I can use an easy PIN to switch between users. But the CONTENT on those users continues to be the content from my relative and not from me. If there is no easy understandable way to do this in my situation, can you recommend someone in the LA area I can PAY to come over here and fix it??
VERY frustrated.
Even MORE frustrated now. Seriously, can you tell me how I can contact someone with expertise in the LA area who I can pay to get this fixed?
I’ve successfully removed my relative’s account from my Plex TV and then (finally) successfully installed my own account. Then my relative sent me an email invite to be a Friend to his account. I accepted but his content won’t show up anywhere on my TV’s Plex (in my Roku client or anywhere else). What do I have to do to be able to see it as a supplement to my own account?
Now that you’re „Friends“, it’s actually up to your relative to grant you access to certain / all libraries of their server.
- They need to open https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/users-sharing
- They need to hover over your record in their friend list and click to edit it
- They need to select which libraries they want to share and save the updated settings

Thanks. I conveyed this to my relative, who then selected two libraries to share with me. Then, on my iPad, I clicked on the Friend invite link he’d emailed me a week ago, but then I got that same “Oops” screen back from Plax. Also, I went on my Roku to see if my relative’s content had shown up there, but it hadn’t shown up there either. I should mention that after my relative sent me the Friend’s invite last week, he’d also sent me a Home invite link. I don’t know if that may somehow be part of the problem or what the possible solution might be. Would it solve things if he sent me a new Friends link invite? Also, I don’t know how to accept an invite on my Roku since it doesn’t have email. Does Roku just automatically show any shared accounts so long as the Invite link is accepted from any other email platform?
