I’m trying to do some testing to get the server working off a USB hard drive plugged into my router. How do I add a second server? All the help doco points to what you get when you first go through the setup, but I can’t find out where to add it after that process.
Where’s that second server of yours supposed to run?
After you installed the software, run it and make sure to access the server‘s bundled web app from within the same network/subnet.
As I said, I’m hoping it will run off my router which has a USB hard drive plugged into it. I don’t know whether that will work or not, but I figured the best way to find out was to try to add it as a media server/library.
IIRC there were some special routers which were capable of running a Plex Media Server.
You’ll need some kind of platform that can run the app of the PMS. In most cases, that won’t be a router by itself (I’m not aware of any current models doing this).
You should be able to mount the storage attached to the router from your existing server and add folders located on that drive to your existing Plex Media Server (⠇ > Manage Library > Edit... → Add Folder)
Shame. The only way I can give the PMS access to the HD plugged into the router is via a mapped drive, and that will only work when my PC is on.
I want to have Plex without having a PC running 24/7, and particularly a Windows PC. I might look at a Raspberry Pi (or an old MiniPC, possibly running Ubuntu). And if I can work out how to do it, I’ll have it auto-switch off at midnight.
(I wonder if Plex can display a message on the screen at 11.55pm warning me it will switch off, giving me time to override the schedule…)
If you’re concerned for your power bill, consider building a Plex server with something like the Intel N100M from Asrock, or a similar mini PC with that CPU. The N100 is a superbly efficient chip, and actually pretty capable for general compute tasks. It also has Intel’s UHD integrated graphics, which will work very well for Plex.
