I have Plex installed on my NAS and that works fine but I’d like to know if it’s possible to play media from there AND another location like an external HD connected to my PC? All I can do right now is add locations from my NAS. If I installed Plex for Windows would it work alongside my NAS or mess things up?
yes. it will create two servers. you will need to change the port it is using on the laptop to something than default and forward that port in your router if you don’t have upnp on.
But if you tell people the reason you want two places to stream from some people may have better advice on how to fix/achieve what you are looking for.
I’m sure some where in these threads or reddit there is a post on setting up two servers on one network.
Copy the files over and add them to a library. If the files are temporary in nature, create a separate library for them. For example, you could use a “Other Video” library and Plex will not try to match them to any online databases.
Option 2: Install Plex Media Server on your PC.
There is no limit on the number of Plex Media Server installations on your account. You can install Plex Media Server on your PC and use it to share the media on your PC. It will appear as a second Plex server on your account. Many people run multiple PMS servers.
Option 3: Mount the PC folder on the Synology NAS.
This is technically possible, but not a good idea. You would enable sharing on your PC, then mount the directories you share on the NAS and add them to a Plex library.
However, this will cause problems every time you shutdown your PC. The Synology will throw alarms about a missing mount. The Plex Server on the Synology will see libraries disappear and think the movies/shows/etc are no longer available. The media disappearing/re-appearing could lead to database corruption, affecting playback for all media.
