After years of curating various films and cuts, I tend to keep multiples versions in my Plex library. Unfortunately, there’s no way to edit names of these different “versions” inside Plex and are only identifiable by their codec and resolution. For some files, this is an impossible way to keep track of which film you’re watching and have to scrub around to find it. For instance:
Let’s take the film The Dark Knight
In my Plex library entry, I would have two versions: one for the theatrical and another for IMAX. If they were both 4K resolution, there would be no way of identifying the version without playing it and going to an IMAX scene. Not impossible, but still an annoyance.
It becomes more troublesome for versions with alternate cuts and extended editions - there is no way to see which one it is without playing the version and checking the runtime/finding the extended scene.
For me, I like to have both IMAX and theatrical versions, alongside any open matte, extended, alternate, and director’s cuts.
A simple custom tag for the version would allow consolidation of various entries in the library while still allowing the user to choose which version they want to play.
