FFmpeg already has multiple methods to solve this issue like DRC, or audio compressor filtering in its encoders. I don’t get why PMS hasn’t exposed this function to the users. It’s very simple to use.
This is a must-have feature and it’s really disappointing to find this thread is nearly 14 years old.
If you happen to be watching on a mac, Compressito is an option to solve this issue.
Quiet dialog followed by super loud action/music/explosions was my standard for years. Then I had a daughter, and I had to make the dialog basically inaudible to not wake her with the action scenes. (and subtitles are cool, but sometimes you want to hear and not read a movie).
I figured it was finally time to make a solution, so I built Compressito. The prototype took a few days (the magic of AI), and then it took me months to polish it (the magic of the long tail). It is a paid app with a very generous return policy.
Its a super straightforward little app, but now whenever Compressito is off my wife asks “Is the audio app on?” and I turn it on. Hopefully if it can make her happy, it can make you happy too
