Plex is great in letting us pick a TV show from the guide and have it record it automatically. The problem is that some shows will not start at the expected time, such as those following sports shows or special open-ended programs.
To be fully featured Plex should have a recording option to choose a channel, date, and time start and length of time recording or end record time (or both).
Suggesting I choose the program before and after as well as the program in the middle I want, is not feasible, as this would make 3 recordings to watch to see my show. Please add this capability.
There’s already an existing suggestion discussing various options to record programs independently from the guide, e.g. based on manual channel/start/end input. Please comment/vote in that thread in order to help us avoid distracting or cannibalizing votes.
Unless I’m missing some unique aspect of your suggestion I’ll close this thread as a duplicate.
I think I am proposing something different. If I read it right, the proposal is for adding a schedule for something not in the EPG yet… That wouldn’t help me when the start and stop times in that future EPG are not what the actual program will be… A long sports game would push the desired program off the times of the EPG, and how can Plex figure out ACTUAL start times vs. SCHEDULED start times? Please correct me if I am not following, but I think I’m asking for something far different and more useful.
Admittedly the initial post in that thread is establishing a wider definition as for what should be supported to establish a „custom recording“. However the feature is to record based on a channel, start time and duration/end time is there and further detailed / discussed at length in the thread.

We need the ability to create manual recording timers. There are several use cases:
EPG data is wrong or we know a show is often delayed by sports, or is sports and might run for a very long time over it’s slot, etc. So, in this case, I would like to be able to say Record on Sunday on channel 123 from 7PM - 12AM. The name of the recording would have to be determined as well, perhaps allow a name to be specified.
You can instruct Plex to start recording X minutes before the scheduled beginning of the program and extend the recording to Y minutes after the scheduled end of the program.
Just enter the advanced options of the recording job.
