Adding folders to new HD

Using Plex server on a Windows Server 19 Essentials
I now have 3 folders with movies.
-Movies
-Movies 2
-Movies 3
These 3 folders are across 2 Hard drive.
But I’ve added a new bigger Harddrive (SATA 16 Gb)

Is there a way "to merge"the databases into 1, or just copy all files to the new HD and scan everthing again ?

So you want to move all the content from the 2 hard drives to the new bigger one?

I’m not sure what you mean by this. By “databases” do you mean “Libraries”

Refresh the metadata for those libraries

Yes, (don’t MOVE) but….

COPY all the files to the new drive.

Then add the folders on the new drive to Plex and scan them in to the same libraries

Do not remove the old folder paths….YET

After the scan, Plex will now see 2 copies of the media and they will combine as duplicates keeping all the old “date added and other metadata” (you can verify this by searching for duplicates)

Then you can remove the old folder path inside Plex to the old location and scan the library again and empty the trash. (if you don’t have empty trash after every scan enabled)

I’m assuming all of those movies are matched to an online source. If those movies aren’t matched, I’m not sure if it will keep the same information. I’ve seen conflicting information on that, and honestly, I’ve done this and had it work one time but not another

Yes , I mean libraries

Yes, most of the Movies have an online source. Some of them weren’t detected. So i had to manually correct the metadata.
I’m glad i asked it here, otherwise I would have taken the wrong way of fixing it. thanks !

I’ve seen this recommendation before (COPY […], not MOVE). I frequently reorganize my library contents to rebalance drive capacity, and I always MOVE, not COPY.

I first create a new, empty folder to which I want to move content, and add it to the Plex library I’m working with. Then I move the files (in my case, Windows File Explorer). Plex seems to handle this just fine, maintaining watch history and other metadata.

Is there a situation I’m not aware of where moving can cause a problem?

Interesting, I usually

  1. add the new (empty) path to the library
  2. MOVE all the files across to the new location.

Always worked flawless. Is there anything I don’t see, that would favour your steps over mine?

Asked the same question above. The only bit of metadata that I know doesn’t copy over are the detected intro credits. But the new into detection goes quickly, so not a bother.

Ok, one more thing to add:

As I said in my opening post, I have 4 libraries on 2 hard drives

-Movies on HD 1
Movies 2
Movies 3
Movies 4 --these 3 libraries are on HD 2

I don’t want to use Movies, movies2, movies 3, movies 4 again on the new HD
I want the libraries from all 4 movies libraries from the old HD copied to the new HD, so that I will end up with one big library “Movies” on the new HD.

Is this possible without scanning all files again on the new HD ?

Unfortunately not. If the storage location of a video changes, it depends on a few factors whether Plex will be able to re-cognize the file as one that it already has it its library.
Your best chance is to do it this way:

  1. keep the old hard drives plugged in and operational, only add the new drive
  2. add the new drive to the Plex library
  3. disable periodic and automatic library scans in Plex for now. Alternatively stop Plex server altogether.
  4. copy all the files to the new drive,
  5. still keep the old drives operational
  6. start a library scan in Plex

In an ideal case, each poster in your library should know have 2 media files attached to it (verify using the Duplicates filter and the plex media info).
If that is the case, you can now remove the old drives from your Plex library and from the computer.

Then scan the library again, followed by emptying the library trash.

I just created Library "Movies"on the new HD, and MOVed allfiles from 2 other (old) HD to the new Library.
Plex handled it just fine. No need to scan, or empty trash.
Once all the files were moved, i could simply delete the old folders on the old HD’s
