Moving movies to another folder on the same drive but retaining info

When I set up my Plex Server, I already had all of my “collections” in it’s own folder on the hard drive (Stuff like all Star Wars movies, etc). So when I set up my Plex Server, I just added a “Movies - Collections” folder to the Library. I took the time and added custom posters and made collections.

I’ve now decided to move those movies to my main movies library. Is there any way to do this while keeping at the very least, the metadata and posters? I can live with recreating the collections, but the thought of doing all of the data and posters makes me want to rip my eyes out.

My hard drive has the following folders.

Movies - Collections
Movies - Main
TV Shows
Etc…

I want to merge “Movies - Collections” to “Movies - Main” on the same drive

I have tried a few things already with no success.

  1. Tried to add the folder to the library (Manage Library -> Edit -> Add Folders)
  2. Tried to make a copy of a folder of movies from “Movies - Collections” to “Movies - Main”
  3. (per a user in Reddit) I refreshed the metadata, waited til it finished, disabled empty trash, moved the files, scanned the library and it started adding them as new and grabbing metadata from the internet.

Every time, it scans the Movies main folder and adds everything as new.

Not sure what else I can try. Thanks in advance.

Server Version#: 1.19.2.2737
Player Version#: various

Try this:

  1. Edit the Movies-Main library and add the directories for Movies-Collections.
  2. Re-scan -Main. It should now show all the movies from both libraries.
  3. Copy, don’t move, the movies from -Collections to -Main. You’ll have duplicates, but this is desired and will get cleaned up later.
  4. Re-scan -Main. Plex should show duplicates in -Main. You’ll see a “2” in the upper left corner of the movie poster.
  5. Delete the movie from -Collections (or move it to a location Plex doesn’t scan).
  6. Re-scan both libraries. Plex should show one copy in -Main and none in -Collections.
  7. When all movies are moved, you can delete the -Collections library if desired.
  8. At the server level, empty trash, clean bundles, optimize the database.

When you get to step 3, test the procedure with one or two movies to make sure things work as desired. If it does, you can then relocate the rest of the movies.

Well, sadly that didn’t work either. It’s so weird that you can move stuff from one drive to another and retain al of the info but moving it from folder to folder doesn’t work. Anyways, thanks for the suggestion!
