Adding subtitles to ripped Blu-ray and dvds

I’m creating my digital library I convert all of my files to mp4. How do I add the subtitle tracks so I can select it in Plex when I want to. I would prefer not to have it burned in unless it’s a foreign film. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The mp4 format is an issue. It cannot store VOBSUB or PGS subtitles.
(or at least: not all devices can read those subtitle formats from a mp4 file)
So if you want to keep the subtitles from the discs unchanged, I recommend you to switch to the MKV container format.

The alternative is to perform OCR on all subtitle tracks (doesn’t go without misrecognizations and subsequent manual edits) and convert them into the SRT format.
Or download SRT subtitles from certain websites (but there are no guarantees that these will be available for every movie, particularly not ‘forced’ subtitles).

I understand but how do I merge them in a manner where I can turn subtitles on and off. I understand hard coding, but some movies I got from friends are set up really nice where I can select multiple subtitle tracks and so on. I just don’t know how to merge the two files in that manner wether it be mp4 or mkv and so on

If you rip the disc the right way (google makemkv), all those subtitle tracks are separately. They might be still within the same file, but can be enabled individually.
This is called ‘soft subtitles’.
Plex can handle this. You will get a subtitle selector for each video where you can enable the subtitles.

If you follow the link I have set above, it explains how to achieve the same with separate files for each subtitle track.

Ok I do have make mkv and handbrake. I’ll take a look at that thank you very much.

  • it’s days like this that makes me miss the early 2000’s when you could copy any and everything with ease.
