Additional (better) Collection Sort Ordering

I have grown to LOVE collections. I have many of them. One issue I have found is that some collections can’t be sorted correctly unless the individual movies are already sorted correctly. Let me explain as that sounds really odd…

When I have a collection of Stephen King Movies there is no problem All the movies have their own name. They are sorted in the main movie library by their name (ex: Christine, Cujo, The Green Mile, etc…) I can sort them by release date or alpha. This isn’t really an issue at all in this type of collection. Same with my Horror Movies or Disaster Movies. These all work well sorted by date actually. Or by alpha.

The problem lies in collections such as my AVENGERS MOVIES collection. If you sort them in the main movie library by their original name (Hulk, Iron Man, Dr. Strange, Ant Man, etc…) and add them all to the collection “Avengers Movies” you cannot sort them in VIEWING order. However, if you sort them in the main movie library as I do using sort titles of: Avengers 01 Avengers 02 Avengers 03, etc… You now have the correct viewing order. However, now your main library has them all together. This is NOT a major issue, but if you are doing this, why use collections in the first place. Just use the sort order.

In other words, you can have your library be nice and alphabetical for ease of finding a movie by name, or have it ugly by having MOST of it alphabetical as it should be and having some movies way out of place so that they are sorted in view order of their collection.

Seems to me this could all be fixed with the addition of a field in the movie info section. You have sort order already. If you ADD a field: Collection View Order it would give us the ability to sort them in the main library one way and in the collections by the proper viewing order.

Of course, please don’t do this in lieu of the MUCH requested (after how many 100’s of requests and how many years of those requests ) ability to SHARE PLAYLISTS WITH OUR SERVER USERS & OTHERS!!!

Thanks…

Greg

Not sure if I understand you correctly.

You are saying that within the collection, Marvel movies are out of order because it is sorted based on title? You should be able to edit the collection and go into advanced tab to choose between alphabetical and release date sorting option.

No… It’s out of order because you can’t sort by VIEW ORDER.

So…IF I want the movies to show up in the MAIN LIBRARY LISTING alphabetically then they will be scattered all over the library as they all start with different letters. Ok…no issue there. I USED to put them all together IN THE MAIN LIBRARY by simply changing the sort field inside the movie information (little edit pencil icon) to group them all together. Thus, I used that field to sort them as: Avengers 01, Avengers 02, Avengers 03, etc… The numbers are based on how you should watch the movies. NOT alphabetically NOR by the year/date they were released. But rather, how you watch them to be in chronologically correct order based on the movie timelines.

Hope that makes sense so far…

Now, I got rid of all those Avengers ## in the name sort field because I like the idea of the COLLECTIONS instead. Thus, they all went back to being sorted in the MAIN library alphabetically.

I have now added AVENGERS to my COLLECTIONS field in the movie edit section. So I have a COLLECTION of all my Avengers movies. The problem is that sorting by release date OR alphabetically puts them in the wrong order for viewing them.

IF a new field were added to the movie edit section this could be fixed. COLLECTION VIEW ORDER where you could enter the view order number (ie: 01, 02, 03, etc…) and then add to the Collections Advanced field the sort ability of VIEW ORDER these would work perfectly. If VIEW ORDER is selected as the method of sorting a collection it would look for the Collection View Order field in the movie edit area. If Alpha or Year is selected then it would simply ignore the VIEW ORDER field. This way a movie can be in multiple collections and be sorted differently based on that collection.

Hope that makes it a bit more clear.

I second this 100x. EXACTLY what I am contemplating on at this very moment. Just put all the Infinity Saga (Avengers) Movies into a Collection and wanted to sort them by viewing order.
