I love the new "Extras" feature in Plex! However, the set of categories isn't quite large enough to carry the range of possible extras. Assuming it isn't practical to allow arbitrary categories, I'd like to see the following added:
Music Video - for movies that have music videos associated with them
Documentary - for documentaries associated with the subject but not really behind the scenes (e.g. The Original Freedom Riders supplied with The Butler)
Extra - a generic category for things that don't fit in any of the otters
I agree, I came here to suggest a new “musicvideo” extra category and found your post. We need some more extra types, hopefully this will be considered some time.
Anime has lots of extras that shouldn’t be considered “specials” as they are not OVAs or special episodes, but extra things like opening and closing music, or sometimes behind the scenes interviews, none of which coincides with the “specials” of the storyline in the series.
I like this idea as well. I have added a few extras myself and had a hard time placing them. I used the folder approach and why not just have any folder name translated to an extra category? Then we aren’t stuck with whatever the developers seems fit.
That’d be a sweet feature.
Personally I’m still looking for 3 key aspects I couldn’t yet figure out:
ability to edit metadata for extras (e.g. name, sort name - optionally also ability to re-assign extra-category)… today I’ve got lots of “deleted scenes” with a prefix to maintain order which impacts overview
ability to have extras which are associated with own TMDB/… records. Example: with lots of Pixar movies there’s feature-independent shorts which I’m comfortable with having in an own library (e.g. Up’s “Partly Cloudy”, Monster Inc’s “For the Birds” or Wall-E’s “Presto” - on the other hand there’s feature related shorts like Wall-E’s “Burn-E” or Up’s “Dug’s Special Mission”. As all those have their own TMDB record it’d be nice for Plex to be able to actually find/use the metadata/artwork
ability to have extras per TV episode (as mentioned above… e.g. useful for alternative cuts, episode specific extras) - or alternatively extras on season level… however I understand this is tricky as none of the databases used to feed metadata is actually covering this kind of structure (seems this would be restricted to manual editing).
The Extra system should be changed to categorize by folder alone and not in the file naming conventions.

If you want further categories then you simply create folders and have the extras categorize them based on the folder they are on.
But this idea that we should rename each file to categorize it is far too user intensive.
Especially considering the limited categories that can be used.
By opening it up to the Child Folders of a master Extras folder it allows those who demand over categorizing to do so while letting the rest of us to simply keep the same Extra format used in other media players like XBMC without massive renaming of files and trying ti pigeonhole them into one category or another just to show up in Plex.
