Movie and TV Extras

Over the last few years, I’ve started ripping and encoding extras from DVDs and Blu-Ray discs that interest me. This is true for both movies and for TV. Since I have no way of indexing them on Plex, I usually forget about them. I would like to be able to have some sort of link from the Movie or TV series to this extra content.

There is as of yet no ideal way to do this for movies, but for TV Shows Plex will identify TV Show extras correctly as long as you maintain the proper naming structure. Specials or extra content per TVDB naming conventions is proceeded by season 0. So, for an extra for a TV series you would name it: TV Show Name - s00e## - Name of Extra. You can find the corresponding extras episode numbers for your shows at TVDB.

Yeah there’s the TV stuff that’s been cataloged as Extras on TVDB, which is usually placed in the Season 00 section. But some DVDs for TV content have tons of extras, most of which isn’t addressed by TVDB. I would definitely like to see some kind of link or button within Plex to be able to get to that content. As far as the mechanics of this, I’m thinking there could be a new Media type for this content, or make another “Home Movies” section. With each video in that section, you should be able to link it to either a movie, a TV episode, a TV season, or a TV show.

I keep a lot of extras & specials for TV Shows and find most to be index correctly on TVDB and for what’s not, I add it myself. If you aren’t having that experience I’d highly recommend you add to the database for your favorite shows, contributing is what makes all this great data available for us all.

I like your idea and agree - though I think I’d prefer the PMS just see and respect any sub-folders named extras. I’d especially like to see this implemented for movies. In my ideal flow, clicking a movie in a movie library section would recognize if there were an extras folder (along with a trailer) and present you the option to browse contents in place.

That’s a good point, David. I should start contributing to thetvdb.com with extras I’ve encoded from TV shows. I also like the idea of when selecting a movie being able to see any related content all together, be they trailers streaming from imdb.com or local content.

Ideally, there’d be another site like the TVDB that included extras. TheTVDB mods are kind of insane and inconsistent, but one thing they’re very adamant about is ONLY THINGS THAT WERE ON TV, AS THEY WERE ON TV (except when they want to do the exact opposite, with no/nonsensical explanation, often completely contradicting their reasoning in the exact same situation for a different show). They’re also incredibly hostile to suggestions or even asking why… I can understand not putting up with people being rude, stupid, or making demands, but even polite, well-reasoned comments are attacked. It’s really not a friendly place.

Anyway, sorry for the tangent, but long story short… if the extras did not air on TV, they (usually) do not allow them in the database. They make an effort to police the Specials sections of a show, and remove anything that they don’t like.

Another vote here for movie extras!

I keep all my extras in an 'extras' subfolder inside the movie's folder. They are related to the movie so this only makes sense. Unfortunately because Plex doesn't know what to do with them (and I can't even find a way to hide them from the server) I just end up changing all of the titles on the server to "zzz extras" just to get them (somewhat) out of the way when using Plex.

Ideally I'd love to see an 'Extras' option when choosing a movie in Plex, similar to when you have multiple copies of the same movie. This would just show a similar list when selected showing the file names. I definitely don't want them cluttering up my list of movies making it harder to find something to watch (as they currently do).

Yeah I'd love to see support for extras. TheTVDB doesn't catalog any extras. Only aired specials and as FrozenTrout already stated... they only do this when they feel like it. Don't bother trying to submit your own data because they WILL delete it and lock you out if the series you're trying to edit hasn't already been locked. I've added about 40 TV shows to my Plex so far and not 1 is accurately cataloged in TheTVDB.

Would love to see some sort of 'extras' folder support or another nice way to handle these.  Keep the votes coming, people!  :)

Would be good to see support for this - even if it's only manually maintained metadata.

I guess one way to do this is to use a TV container and the plugin for xbmc-plex-nfo metadata agent so you can group and sort and manually maintain the metadata yourself.

This is the only feature I've missed since my Popcorn Hour died and I decided to switch to Plex.   I gained a lot, but I miss my trailers (and other extras) a lot.

I love that Plex is now a great solution for managing my NAS media library, but this is one key missing feature.  How many votes does it take to get this on the development roadmap?

wtf is this then if they don't allow extras that were DVD only?

The two specials were DVD only as far as I am aware.... hell the only non DVD only special for that show was the "last" one... but technically the 2 specials should be after.. but meh.

The Issue is that TVDB will not let you add DVD Extras to their database and if they see you doing so they will lock the series on you.

I have tried to lobby for them to make a Special RESERVED episode (like S00E00 or E99) that could be a catch all for DVD Extras we might have so we can get a proper Scrape for this content without having to mess up their Database but they seem extremely hesitant to make an concessions on their part to help us get around the problem.

If they reserved one Episode number for DVD Extras we could at least join all the uncataloged Extras we have into one specials Episode and have it scrape properly...

They could be retrieved from a different database, for example dvdextras.net.  But really we don't need that - all we need is the ability to add "-extra" or something at the end of files in a movie/tv-show's directory folder, and Plex could just list them using the filename we give them, in the Plex-client/PHT page for that movie/tv-show.

So for example if you have a directory for "Jurassic Park (1993)" and in it you have the movie file as well as "Hurricane in Kauai Featurette -extra.mkv" and "The Making of Jurassic Park -extra.mkv", then it could just use those titles for them in a list in the client page for Jurassic Park, and let you select them in some way, to view/play them.

We don't really need separate poster art or details for the extra content; we just need some way to view/play them from a simple list, and it can be a list we create ourselves per movie/tv-show.

I like your method much better than the one I suggested.

Mine was just to get around the stubbornness of TVDB devs

Yours would work for any media.
