If I refer to Discover, I’m being inclusive of the Watch More in search, the listings at the bottom of watch lists, etc., as an inclusive term for all of these.
General:
Discover content should be opt-in, not opt-out.
Control of these should be accessible to the user at any time to enable or disable.
While services are selectable, there should be the option to display from all services, from subscribed services only, or none if disabled.
Content limitations should be respected by the user settings for Movies and TV - NOTE: ADMINS DO NOT CURRENTLY HAVE A RESTRICTION SECTION. Guest profile used as an example:
Access to local content needs to continue working even if local Internet is out.
Would like some customization of Discover tab similar to control on Home tab, such as whether to show trailers, whether discover content is duplicated on Home tab, etc.
I understand what @josephmgaffney is trying to get at… but I’ve brought this scenario up before with the Plex teams and ninja’s. This somehow steps on their toes, saying something along the lines of piracy. I’m telling you, I tried to get this accomplished and was met with pretty firm stances from them.
My example is that my mother has her grandkids over and at one time I was sharing a few libraries that had cartoons with my mom’s server.
She too has Managed users for the grandkids and I asked a question about how come I wasn’t able to share MY libraries, libraries I ALREADY gave access to mom on her server, but she then WASNT able to share those libraries down to her Managed users?
And I was firmly told no, that that wasn’t going to be possible.
And just like the email that’s sent out to receive access to the server the first time, IF that recipient WISHES to pass on their privileges down to a managed user account, I imagine all it would have taken was for that Admin to request permission, sending yet another email detailing the nature of the request and for what managed user.
There’s literally already one off content sharing as well as Playlist Sharing for those who don’t have Plex accounts.
I don’t see how this is ANY different compared to all the other scenarios that’s currently available.
Anyway, I’m out, this whole thread can be deleted since as you said Plex isn’t going to look at requirements, just make another decision and run with it, so I’m done.
Well, the question comes down to… IF this feature is ONLY usable by Admins… and not others in the household with their own profiles (managed users). WHY even bother with something that the all of the admins that utilize ‘managed users’ cannot use!!! It baffles me on why work is done that is advertised for the general public and then they say… OH YA! YOU CAN USE IT!! BUT ONLY THE ADMIN CAN!!!.. um where is the smarts in that? Sorry to be sarcastic but whoever decided to make this REALLY didn’t think this through. As a person in IT, this is waste of time, money and feature.
Discover is the only good feature I remember coming out in a really long time, combined with watchlists it can be extremely powerful. Plex can be a streaming hub… but why, why on earth would it only be available for the admin?? Most people rarely use their admin account to watch daily, let alone other users. Admins can even utilize the watchlist like a “To add to my server” list, admins could see users’ watchlists or have a section for content in managed users’ watchlists that isn’t on the server, so users can add upcoming movies they want to watch, admin sees that it’s digitally available, adds it.
Discover is the best new feature that nobody can use …except the Plex Administrator.
The sad thing is, Plex almost never listen to what their users want. I wouldn’t be surprised if 2-3 years from now Plex users are still waiting for this feature to be available to managed users.
Most of the backlash for keeping it for admins was because of the haphazard launch that this feature had. There was xxx film content that was mixed between and there was absolutely no way at initial launch for admins to have controlled that aspect at all. It was launched as a ALL or NOTHING approach from Plex due to their contract of pushing it out on all, while also calling it BETA. That is why it there was so much controversy of making sure content was not viewable to children or other managed users. There was absolutely no trust of how the functionality worked at first launch. And it only made sense for the admin to initially have the ability to use it because of many issues.
I don’t know why anyone would think it’s okay for unrated content that had xxx and other related content would be okay to unleash to managed users unless Plex made it throughly clear it would not happen. Except, that was not the case.
After months after launch, Discovery is STILL a beta feature. That says a lot.
