I absolutely love Plex and have loved it for over a year now. I will forever be a PlexPass member for this wonderful software. I would, however, like to see the adoption of XBMC Eden sometime in the near future! If you directly compare Plex and Eden on a video decoding standpoint, Eden does the job so much better. I cannot go back to XBMC after having On-Deck and myPlex.
Also, where is my DTS-Ma and TrueHD bitstreaming?! I’d like to be able to watch my blurays with full quality audio. Eden now does this.
Here’s to Plex adopting Eden very soon!
-1, I’d rather see Plex develop it’s clients without having to ahem ‘adopt’ code from XBMC. Especially when they don’t contribute anything back to XBMC.
XBMC has the ond deck feature now, there’s still nothing like myplex or a simple centralised library/streaming.
I’d rather see this too, but it’s not what they are doing. They may be a fork, but still rely on the XBMC code. At least for the Windows side of things. And even though Plex split from XBMC due to Mac development, let’s face it, it’s still a Windows world (in terms of PC). The way Plex is going (toward anywhere media/mobile) they don’t want to be stuck in a niche market (MacOS). There are plenty of folks with Windows HTPCs running Plex. I have a handful, and recommend them to folks that enjoy my media set up.
Plex presents it’s media in a far better fashion and has better, more useful features than XBMC. However, when I sit down and play my blurays through Plex, I’m disappointed that there is no HD bitstreaming. I’m disappointed to see XBMC outshine Plex in video decoding. The quality is NOTICEABLY worse in Plex, than in Eden. Laika is based off of Dharma. I’m sure they will merge Eden code into the client, but IMO, that should’ve been higher priority than Web streaming and PlexPass.
The desktop client is fully open source, and we can't force the XBMC team to accept enhancements made to it :)
Much of the content we play has AAC audio which Plex tends to choke on (Mac Mini early 2009 with optical audio only (no audio over DP or HDMI ports).
We’re actually spending more time in XMBC than Plex as a consequence. Damn shame.
