Hi! I’m a Lifetime plex pass user and loooong time Plex user since XBMC. I’ve always been a champion for Plex, but lately it seems playing my media has taken several steps in the wrong direction (and in some cases just flat out doesn’t work). So I will share my feedback to the Plex team so hopefully in the future users like me will not be forced to use Emby or seek alternatives.
- My main goal for a media server/player environment is to get the highest quality playback that I can for my supported setup. This has been very difficult to do with Plex clients over the years even though my hardware would support direct play of certain codecs. Plex always seems to lag behind in support for newer codecs and things like Dolby Vision Profile 7 playback of any kind, TrueHD support natively, and never seem to put much effort into decoding these formats inside the apps it offers. I always end up having to use 3rd party apps like Infuse for MacOS, iOS and AppleTV, or Kodi on systems that support it to have stable playback.
I first started with Jellyfin and discovered it was night and day compared to Plex as a player on certain devices (even though that’s a free ecosystem). Then finally switching to Emby it became even more clear that for what I want (great high quality stable playback and direct play support across multiple devices) Plex is no longer the best option for this unfortunately.
I hope users and developers here may find some use for my feedback, it sucks for me because I have such a large library to migrate, but unfortunately I think it’s necessary considering the many issues with playback I’ve experienced with Plex over the years. If it wasn’t for Infuse, I may have made this switch many years ago and now I kind of regret that I didn’t.
I wish Plex and all the cool users here I’ve met the very best going forward ![]()
