Roku (Just in case you ask)
I have a Roku. I do not record anything with DVRs or anything else. I do not usually watch any “live” TV, not even on Plex. Today I turned on Plex on my TV, clicked to continue watching My Own Personal Media File That I Ripped (of “M”-- German classic), and I had to watch three ADS before I could watch MY file.
What gives? What about this? Is this a glitch?
### Are you putting ads into my personal content?
Absolutely not! That would be a really terrible idea for many, many reasons. Your media collection—including your recorded movies and tv shows, home videos, photos, music collection, and more—will continue to stream to all of your devices ad-free.
This is on your site. Why did this happen? Why did this happen more than once? Why did the exciting manhunt of a child murderer get interrupted by ads from Pizza Hut??
Yes, I’m sure I am on my own Roku, watching my own file.
More than likely Plex’s “new” intrusive discover “feature” bit you in the butt. If you clicked on a movie it probably picked up one from one of the services Plex believes should be prioritized over local media.
Plex keeps reiterating that they don’t include ads into your local content.
For what it’s worth, Elijah is probably wrong as for this being streamed through the Discover/Universal Search feature from another provider… it could actually be you started watching the movie from Plex’ own video on demand service
Wow, thank you for pointing that out to me. I’ve unpinned it and am reading up on disabling it (so far, sounds grim). I hope it can be done.
I’m cringing at how this is probably going to affect my files. I have a collection of old classic films that I’m sure stream elsewhere, but I’m only interested in MY stuff.
It’s not going to affect them. Even if you leave it turned on it won’t affect them. Discover or the Watchlist don’t do anything to your local content and any claims otherwise are baseless speculation/fear-mongering.
As it is, it sounds like either you somehow ended up watching it through the plex online movies and TV provider (which you’ve discounted) or there’s a bug.
The only other possibility that sounds to mind could be if you were watching a movie and what you saw were trailers.
if you play the file through some native video player… any ads showing?
do you get ads when streaming the video through Plex in another app?
any prerolls/local trailer videos that could contain those ads?
The last situation I remember where a user reported such an issue it was some hacked Android box that injected ads into videos playing in other apps. Most of the times, users remember they might have played the vide from another source (not saying that’s the case with you… just explaining where I’m coming from).
Edit: just because we mentioned it… Plex seems to have M listed on their video on demand service
Thank you, Krazeh. It has already affected my files. If I’m watching a supposedly uninterrupted movie and ads appear, the files are affected.
So I unpinned Discover, and there was no change, but I did go thru the 2nd and 3rd set of 90-second commercial interruptions. That being said, I never even scrolled thru the movies offered on Plex till right this minute, but I haven’t found “M” in their listing. Doesn’t mean it’s not there but… 1931, German, classic of global cinema nestled in the loving arms of Steven Seagal and 21 Jumpstreet? Nahh.
EDIT: I found M on Plex, too. So yeah, it is there, nestled amidst Seagal and Jumpstreet. Lol
I hope it was just some sort of glitch. fingers crossed
Thank you again for your explanation of what could have happened.
Whatever happened has got nothing to do with the Discover or the Watchlist.
Given that you ended up with more commercial interruptions it’s sounding more and more like you were inadvertently watching through the Plex Movies & TV offering (which isn’t a new feature).
