Plex doesn’t inject ads to your local content.
Could it be you accidentally watched media from Plex’ free ad-supported video-on-demand service?

After using Plex for literally years, today I suddenly started getting ads in my personal media. There is no option to skip or fast forward. Worse, the 60 second ads usually hang and I have to exit and restart, but then plex loses my place in the media and goes back to the beginning. 60 second ads are now taking up to 5 mins to get through! Ads in my personal media is basically making Plex unusable for me.

Most definitely not! I was literally watching a video from my personal library this morning, paused it and went to work. Went to continue watching and I had a youtube style ad with a count down timer and no option to fast forward or skip. Plex updated while I was at work. Now getting ads before I play anything from my personal library, and it stops my episodes and movies and plays them during them as well!

If you search the forum for “Plex injecting ads to my local content” you’ll find a wide range of scenarios how users might have ended up playing some online media sources.
The last time I’ve seen a report where users actually had ads injected into content streaming from their local or shared servers were based on some hacked Androids or smart TVs where some malware messed with active video streams on an OS level… the last of those I remember goes back several years.

Can you verify it’s showing your server/library name in the top-left of the details page when you’re opening those items (and not Movies & Shows on Plex)?
I’m not saying you don’t see the ads – but it’s an easy mistake and so far none of reports I’ve seen played out to be valid (hence I’m a bit skeptical… no offense)
